Almost 10 years ago, I went to the ER and was told that I have genital herpes. I thought it was an allergic reaction to an over the counter yeast infection cream. Anyway, I was told that I have herpes. I have not had an outbreak since then. Remember, it was 10 years ago. I've thought for years that I don't have it since most reading I've done states that stress and other illnesses can cause an outbreak. Is there a blood test that can be performed to diagnosis this if no "blisters" or "sores" are present? The virus lays dormant in one's system, so once you have it, you always have it. Anyone out there know?

It is usually diagnosed when the person is on an outbreak (this is the best way to diagnose it).

If the person is not having an outbreak though they can have a blood test done. I have heard this is REALLY inaccurate though. I've read some doctors will even give the person 2 or 3 different blood tests and then compare the results of each test to the others.

Once a person has the virus though, they will ALWAYS have it. There is currently no cure for herpes. It is possible for a person to go years and years without having outbreaks though. Typically the longer you have the virus, the less outbreaks a person gets. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years now, my last outbreak was about 2 years ago.

You are getting inaccurate answers. I dont know if it will effect you getting married in Cancun, but contrary to other answers, HERPES CAN BE DETECTED IN A BLOOD TEST EVEN WHEN YOU DONT HAVE AN OUTBREAK. Herpes is a virus. As with any other virus, the antibodies are in your blood for life, and can indeed be detected by a blood test. In fact, that is how most people find out they are a carrier, a lot of people who have herpes dont even know without a blood test because they never have an outbreak. Although, almost everyone has atleast one type of herpes. Virtually everyone has the oral version. I dont think having herpes will prevent you from getting married, but you may need to check local laws because both forms of herpes are classified as an std

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?

But after a friend share this video everything has changed.

Yes there is a blood test. You may have been mis-diagnosed. It's very common. If you have a sore around your genitals....the first thing a doctor wants to say is wrong is herpes.

Yes, there is blood test for that. It is a serologic test for herpes simplex type I and II. But of course, a request from the doctor is needed before it is performed.God bless

Yes, there are blood test that can be done. I was told by a helpline councelor that you must request for the test by name. Also, it should be done within a certain amount of time, after being exposed. In order to get a more accurate result.

Some say that the test is still inaccurate, and if it is negative, should be retested in another 6 months to be certain. Yet the web sites I have researched state that if you have the antibodies in your systom; it will show through this test. This I'm not so sure of since my test was from a culture of a sore.

It is important to know that even if you have no signs or symptoms; does not mean you do not have it. As stated by others here, it does and can go dormant for many years; without any symptoms. My doctor said many have one outbreak, and never have one ever again. Some do, some don't. It all depends on the individual and their system.

I think I would be a little sceptical of a diagnosis from the ER, however. Simply because I had to have a culture done, and waited for a week for the results; when I was diagnosed. Did they do a lab test on yours?

The following are webs sites that list the blood test by name, and phone numbers for a helpline; that may be of further assistance. Good luck! :)
