Very good question. Eat lots of leaffy greens like Romaine Lettuce, collards, mustard greens. Then carrots (cooked), spinach, bell peppers, and most plants even tomatoes. Take Lutein in Supplements.
And drinking alcohol is very bad for the eyes.
My father in law got macular degeneration in his 70's but some people even get it sooner. It robs you of your sight. You get big black spots of nothing in your field of vision. He can't read, drive, and has a hard time getting around. It is terrible.
They told him he should eat lots of leafy greens.

It depends if you want your fruit and veg at it's freshest. That's why froze veg is best but there seems to be a stigma about it because they're linked with fast food companies i.e Bird's Eye. The fact is that when veg is picked, it's frozen very quickly and then shipped to the suppliers frozen, losing very little of it's freshness. I myself, like to support local greengrocers but their fruit and veg just isn't as good. By the time it's been picked and packed and distributed to the consumer the food has been bashed about and subjected to many different temperatures. This makes the quality worse and encourages the food to ripen and go off a lot quicker. Saying that, I think it's always better to support local businesses and buy from small independent traders. At least that way you can pick what you want so you can filter out the bad stuff. The worst fruit & veg to buy is prepacked from the supermarkets. These are normally imported too so not only is it bad for this country's trade, it's also taken even longer to get here so it's got a very short life once you get if home, it if even makes it that far!!!

Blueberries are supposed to be very good for vision. My mother drinks Trader Joe's 100% Blueberry Juice for breakfast every morning and her vision has actually improved (the optometrist said so).
