It started 2 years ago after I was injured (broken ribs and sternum) in a car accident. I healed well except for the yawning

You are on the right track. Yawning a lot is sometimes because of a lack of enough oxygen. The doctor can check your oxygen level really fast with a pulse oximeter that he clips out your finger and does not hurt. It should be at least 97% and should stay up even with exercise. If not, then you may need treatment of some kind. There is another test they can do which is taking blood from an artery (ABG's...arterial blood gas) to tell if you are getting enough oxygen. You can also do some breathing exercizes that will help your lungs expand better. If you take a deep breath and a little more...hold it....then let it out slowly by pursing your lips and blowing it out slow...it will help those little air sacs (alveoli) expand better. Do this several times daily. Your doctor may want a respiratory therapist to do some breathing tests on you also to test your lung capacity.

Human beings yawn as a response of body to get rid of excess carbon dioxide in body.

People yawn when they are tired because they do not get rid of all the carbon dioxide from there body as they are too tired to exhale full air.

Go to an ENT specialist as there may be some problem in your nostrils or any other respiratory organ due to which you are not able to get rid of all the carbon dioxide.

best of luck

Excessive yawning can be a sign of heart disease, so you are right to be concerned. You should definitely check this out with your doctor as soon as possible.

it means your brain needs more air.

You have a serious problem if you yawn 50-60 times a day. See a doctor.
