I'm not an animal lover but am a vegan and can't understand people who claim to love animals but still eat them, perhaps someone can clarify this for me.

When I say I love animals, in my mind I am picturing cats and dogs and seals and tigers. Animalsthat are not bred for this purpose.

I do not pictures sheep or cows or hens. Its a great question and has really made think. It feels like it is compartmentalised into 2 very different segments in my mind that I keep totally separate.

When I see meat on my plate I do not picture sheep or cows or anything. Though I couldn't eat rabbit as I had one as a pet once.

Then again, I love plants and flowers too but I eat the edible ones.

I am sure if I went to an abbortoire? (sorry about spelling) then I would never be able to eat meat again.

But I can not associate the two, my mind doesn't put the two together. If I thought I could cope with it, I would go to an abbortoirre as I wish I could give it up, but I'm too scared.

A rather confusing but honest answer.

I support nature.

Man's natural diet = omnivorous.

Now, I do like nature. I like to see deer and hawks in the countryside near where I live, but I still eat meat, and even venison. Why? Basically my belief that meat is both natural and important in a human diet by FAR supersedes any belief that animals shouldn't be harmed for any reason (which, in fairness, is not a belief I hold anyway; I believe they shouldn't be killed for NO reason; meat, clothing, control and sport are all perfectly good reasons in my opinion). In the case of venison the deer need to be culled in the absence of natural predators anyway. Also animals in the wild invariably receive painful, and usually violent deaths, always followed by consumption by other animals. It's not as if vegetarianism saves the buggers.

Also, while this isn't an explanation, I hope you know that more animals are killed by combine harvesters and pesticides than slaughterhouses (albeit that they are invariably smaller).

Because we are People Eating Tasty Animals - haven't you ever heard of PETA? The latest research out in the last few days was about the feelings and pain centres of plants. I assume you eat some forms of plants - they have the same receptors you should be concerned about. So, now what will you eat? Paper? Oh, no, that comes from trees - another living thing. How about dirt? No, you can't eat dirt, there are precious microbes in it.
So, do you get the point? You can chose what you want to eat, and so will everyone else. We are animal lovers and we rescue cats. We don't eat cats. I think cows are cute, but they also taste really, really good and provide us with wonderful nutrition.

I cannot speak for all animal lovers, and truly there are Vegan animal lovers, but a majority of people might 'love' pets yet do not view cows & pigs & chickens as pets hence they see no reason not to eat them. Here is one that might freak you - - - in certain countries in South America they have these gerbil like animals that they raise like pets yet they eat them. For milenium humankind has stood atop the food chain and thus everything is fair game. To put it simply it is irrational but humans are an irrational species.

Peace....

“As a result, we require a balanced diet of meat and vegitable products to live a healthy well balanced liefstyle. Don't kid yourselves, supplements do NOT provide the same positive nutritional benefits as eating meat provides. If you are not eating meat, you are endangering your well being”

“Man is and always has been a meat eater. The proteins are required for a healthy balanced diet”
you tell me what I need to eat thatc comes from meat but not from vegetables iron is in meat an broccoli
protein is in beans, nuts and meat I don’t eat supplement I eat a halethy balanced vegetarian diet

“meday, do us all a favor and stop forcing your weird lifestlye on the rest of us. Animals are food and nothing more, so get over it. You talk like animals can think, they are dumb, they don't have any purpose other than becoming food”
we’re not forcing our lifestyle on you it was simply a question similar to the ones you’ve been asking animals are more than food they are living thing that can feel pain

“Cause a man (or woman) can not live on bread alone”

No they can live on vegetables too

“the same reason a vegan can grow a living veg and then proceed to cut it from its life supporting stem and eat it plants are living things as well as animals but cos they don't run around then its OK”
do you eat people? I am animal and I don’t eat other animals you think of yourself as a person rite an you don’t eat people that’s my reasoning (Im not actually vegan veggie but what eva)

“Also animals in the wild invariably receive painful, and usually violent deaths, always followed by consumption by other animals. It's not as if vegetarianism saves the buggers.”
It lets animals have a life outside doing normal animal things not locked in a cage
Other Animals eat to survive people don’t need to

“I eat organic meat from a source that looks after their animals, treats them kindly, feeds them the best food and slaughters them humanely, if an animal has had a happy life and has been reared kindly, then what's wrong with eating that then?”

nothing except animals aren’t usually kept like that amd not everybody in the world can be fed if theya re all meat eaters but they can if the world wa svegetarian and some extra do you want I stop people starving?

just so people know im not telling you to be vegetarian/vegan you said yoiur opinion that even if i agree with you can keep
you said your opinion so isaid mine back
any problems

It is kind of hypocritical to be an animal lover but sill eat them, that would be like being a personal trainer and being out of shape,or a nutritionist with bad health, but when you're raised eating something you tend to continue it,like eating meat, they probably don't think of meat as an animal when they go grocery shopping, just as a source of food.

Very good question, I would like to know too.

I guess its to do with some sort of hierachy where they consider themselves better and able to control animals.

I see it as hypocrytical and burying thier heads in the sand. Not just because they eat the animal, but because it directly supports modern animal rearing abuse.

I also don't understand why some people see catsa nd dogs as animals but not cows, pigs, sheep and chickens.

reading the answers above, i guess the "burying your head in the sand" suggestion applies. What can be humane about slaughter. Its an oxymoron.

Some people are so weak " i wish I could give up but I can't" - - - Rubbish, be honest with yourself, you are happy to eat a dead animal just so long as you don't have to see it die. There is no logic to thinking a cat is different to a cow. Get yourself into a field and watch them, you'll soon see they have feelings and think. When I go into our fields the sheep get the football and bring it over to play, I guess you'd turn a blind eye in case that looked too cute would you ?

And the arguement thats its "natural" just doesn't count anymore as they are pumped full of steroids to get the meat quantity up, just go and see a farm or dairy carousel.

The cow doesn't care its been fed organic food, it cares about the cross bolt in front of its eyes though

People eat meat for centuries ,it also has become part of food. And no religion has denied about it and animal lovers love them, just for making dish out of it. And no one believes and preached animals too have soul and re-birth. Even plants have life. Though your question is genuine and discussed worthy, people who have blood and flesh prefers to consume the same from animals. Because people think they are supreme and special from animals, and also believe God has created them for their consumption and they have every right on them.
