Genital warts do go away, but, there is NO cure for the virus that causes them - HPV (human papillomavirus).

Most people are able to get rid of HPV all on their own. But, for some, they have it the rest of their life. There is currently no cure for HPV, only treatment.

Once she treats the warts there is always a chance they can come back. In fact, I've read about 20% of people who have had genital warts have them return and have to have them treated again.

Also, she shouldn't worry about having HPV. It is VERY common. It's actually one of the most common STDs today. I've read about 75-80% of the world has it!

Check out this site for more information on HPV and genital warts:

Also, roughneck30 and Myriam Z are just wrong. They are talking about herpes and Valtrex medication, which is used to treat genital herpes, not genital warts. Genital herpes and HPV (the virus that causes genital warts) are two completely different viruses that have NOTHING to do with each other. Valtrex will do nothing for a person with genital warts.

The visual wart usually goes away when the immune system recognizes the virus. How soon the body recognizes the virus is up to the person's individual immune system. Treatments of the visual wart may help the body recognize the virus. Some people do have the visual warts go away with no treatments.

It is well documented that the visual signs of warts are very emotional.

Your partner may want to try an at home treatment these seem to be better for the individual where there is heighten embarrassment. Some of these treatments do cause irritation. Some are more expensive than others.

In most the visual wart will regress not showing visible signs of the genital wart. He may still have the virus but usually in most the virus does go to a latent state where it is less contagious. If you and he have engaged in sex you probably already share his HPV types. The virus is pretty contagious about a 65% chance of acquiring the virus with first sex with an infected partner. The virus is contagious several weeks to months before the virus shows as a wart. You may never show a sign of the virus...or you could...he may never show a sign of the virus again or he could many years later.

Visible genital warts can be removed by the patient him or herself with medications. They can also be treated by a health care provider. Some people choose not to treat warts, but to see if they disappear on their own. No one treatment is better than another.

she needs to see a dr IMMEDIATELY. They can get rid of them, at least for now. I know at least 15 people who've gotten them. most of them after getting them "lasered off" never got them back again! They say that after about 4 years, if you still haven't gotten them you probably won't. There is hope, but first step is to get rid of them!!! tell her to make an appointment right away. Also, let her know, that this is like one of the most common stds out there, no to feel depressed. she should be more concerned about getting cervical cancer if she doesn't take care of the warts, without proper care she is at risk. by the way, the laser surgery is a pretty short surgery, and they do put you under, so there is not a lot of pain. Bottom Line, go to a clinic, any clinic, even a planned parenthood if she's nervous about where to go. good luck

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.

The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid?such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.
