I have never had it, but sounds like it's the UK version of peanut butter here in states.

Vegemite is the Aussie version. Marmite is the UK version.
It is nothing like peanut butter. It's dark brown and gooey to look at. It is called yeast extract. You spread it really thinly (and I mean REALLY thinly) on toast and butter. It's more like a seasoning. I personally am quite addicted to it.
In the UK, we have an advertising campaign for it that says 'you either love it or hate it', and that seems to be the case.
It tastes salty, yeasty, sharp. It's horrible if you spread it thick like jam/jelly. It goes well in dark brown gravy (the sort that Brits pour over their dinners...not the sort Americans have with 'biscuits' ...which are not biscuits, but scones. Biscuits are cookies to us....but that's another couple of stories!)
;-)

I had Vegamite years ago. It's actually Australian - so, the Aussies' version of peanut butter. Thing is - it's RIDICULOUSLY and excessively salty, grotesquely so. Even Australians admit it's an acquired taste, but as I understand it, they've grown up on the stuff. All I can remember is THE SALT! No other flavors...but maybe my tastebuds were on Over-Load.

I cant explain how it tastes but its very yummy & healthy for you,
you spread it fairly thin on buttered toast or bread, savory biscuits etc or even put it in a stew etc for flavour.
the Americans eat this yucky jelly & peanut paste together,I think that spoils the peanut paste.

If you have never tasted this stuff, it does kinda taste gross. I know quite a few people who LOVE it, b/c they've grown up with it. It's very very healthy, so if you start slowly you may be able to aquire a taste for it. I had it on toast a few years ago and really could not finish it, and I am not a picky eater.
