There are two non-mysterious things that everyone knows about carrots. They are orange and they help prevent night blindness because they are chockful of vitamin C. Both of these facts are technically incorrect. Carrots were formerly every color but orange: red, black, yellow, white and especially purple. First cultivated in Afghanistan in the 7th century, carrots originally had purple exteriors and yellow flesh. In the Middle Ages, the Dutch developed the bright orange carrot we now know as the bearer of carotene. Once in contact with the human intestine it is converted to vitamin A.
The reason carrots are more orange than oranges: The large amount of carotene in the carrot.

Oranges;
All oranges contain carotene — that's what makes them orange.
Hope this helps:)

Ooooh, good question. Could it be because a carrot is more dense, while a good percentage of the orange is water? Also, it could depend on the species (or quality) of each- I've seen some oranges that are only slightly darker than a lemon, all the way to pushing a reddish tint. Same for carrots; there seems to be quite a bit of variation. Those are my best guesses. Texas A&M made a maroon carrot...how's that for throwing a wrench in the works?

Perhaps carrot breeders liked the orange color or thought that it made the carrots more appetizing or desirable.
Hundreds of years ago carrots came in loads of different colours, like yellow, red, purple and even black, but not orange.
Orange carrots didn't go on sale until the 17th century when farmers in Holland worked out a way to grow them orange, to celebrate their countries national colour.

In some languages (as in Slovakian) there is a possibility to say carrot colour instead of orange (mrkvova from mrkva) so somebody in past definitely shared your opinion :)

The carrots are full of carotene. my granddaughter loves them and ate so many as an infant that she had an orange tint to her skin. The pediatrician used to tell us, "I know she is eating her vegetables and getting her vitamins just by looking at her".
She is two now and has lost the orange tint thank goodness.

Good question. Maybe the colour should be called "carrot" not "orange"! But then again....
