A lot of people who are athletic have a lower pulse rate. 40 is getting kind of low though. As long as his blood pressure is ok they may just keep an eye on him. If he complains of dizziness or seems a little sluggish or confused I would think it was too low for him and take him back to ANY doctor or emergency room. Don't wait for a cardiologist even if they might send you to one later. If that doctor told you he should not be exhausted or cannot drive then they think there is a problem. That is not normal. If that is all they told you then I would call them back and say you want more information. You have the right to have them explain why. If they will not help you get a second opinion as soon as you can!!

Need more information. What kind of cardiac condition does your son have? If the doctor is ok with the heart rate than follow his orders or get a second opinion if you are uncomfortable with his answer.

What should you do? You should get a second opinion. You didn't mention how old your son was - but this sounds all sorts of wrong. I personally would not trust any doctor who said i was fine, just unable to function like a normal human being. If your son can't do what he wants due his health - then he's not fine and it's not ok to dismiss him with "just don't be exhausted or drive". Please, get another professional opinion.

You don't trust your cardiologist?? Maybe you should look for a new doctor! Otherwise, take his word for it. If he says it's OK for now, it IS OKAY.

This could be normal for your son. Inform his doctor and express your concern to him.

Does he have an A-V block? Just follow your doctor's advice.
