<>Most shock states deprive the brain of oxygen (via decreased blood supply), and the loss of oxygen cause loss of mental faculties. In hypoglycemia, the deprivation is nutrient (glucose) instead of oxygen, with the same result. The mental processes break down because the neural pathways do not have adequate resources to maintain (orderly) synaptic flow of impulses. In most instances, the condition is not permanent; as soon as the medical condition is addresses and corrected, the mental processes continue as before, following convalescence. It is only after prolonged shock or hypoglycemia that permanent mental impairment might (note the 'might') take place.
