Curry is a very generic term for any gravy based dish in India (meat and vegetarian) - each region in India will differ in the ways they prepare it.

But the most traditional form of curry will have a good blend of spices (and 99% turmeric is always there because Indians consider it to have medicinal properties). Apart from that the curries may or maynot have onion, ginger and garlic paste, and powdered spices like red chillies, cumin, corriander seeds being the most common ones. (Curry powder sold in the shops is just a mix of all this to make life simpler! However an expert cook/ traditional cooks/ my mom and my aunts in India will not use it, but make their own at home)

Every person who makes curry will have their ownunique taste - even in my house when my mom cooks her curries taste much different that what I cook, even though we have used the same ingredients!

Curry powder is a blend of a number of herbs, spices, and seeds. It is widely used in Indian cooking and the items used vary widely from region to region and even family to family.

Most recipes also call for cumin, tumeric, saffron, and other spices, even though the spices may already be in the curry powder. This enhances certain flavors in the particular dish.

You can buy curry powder in most grocery stores in the herb and spice section.

Curry is a spice, yellow in color that comes from India. It's the Turmeric (another seed) that makes the curry yellow in color. Each of the spices has a unique flavor which is why they are used together to create delicious delicasies which are used all over the world but it mostly comes from South Asia.

The term curry is derived from kari, (a Tamil word meaning sauce and referring to various kinds of dishes common in South India made with vegetables or meat and usually eaten with rice). [1] However, the term (meaning a stew) is found in English before the arrival of British traders on the Subcontinent, and may simply have been applied by them to dishes which they thought resembled the stews they were used to. Nowadays the term is used more broadly, especially in the Western Hemisphere, to refer to almost any spiced, sauce-based dishes cooked in various south and southeast Asian styles.
