The 50th wedding anniversary is the GOLDEN anniversary. When we celebrated my in-laws anniversary I have an album made by a craft friend. She used gold lame fabric on the cover, had a cross stitch center on the front with their wedding date and their anniversary date. Inside we chronicled their lives in photos from infancy to that date. I had gold candles on each table and sprinkled candy kisses wrapped in gold paper down the table centers as well a gold lame ribbons coming from the candle holders. We had a gold candelabra at the head table with gold streamers coming down each side. The floral arrangements had their wedding colors and gold lame ribbons. As you can see - the theme was based around their wedding colors and gold.
As for food it depends on if you are having a sit down dinner, a buffet, a dessert table only, etc. You have to make those decisions yourself or ask them what they would like.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to your grandparents!!! They will love whatever you do. If possible put together a CD of their favorite songs and play it throughout the party.

I think it's a good sweet idea to have it on the farm I think it could be really nice with a white tent IF you have any doubt, you could hire a party planner that know how to make the 50th wedding anniversary romantic and elegant I think it could be done very nice The problem I see If it's a surprise party, you will have to get your grandparents off the farm for at least 24 hours

If you have enough time, you should contact every person you're inviting/is attending and have them write fond memory or humorous story ("I remember once when we went to the cabin to go fishing...") about their relationship with your grandparents (about 100-300 words), past them into an album and put a picture of each person next to their story. Not only will it make a FAB conversation piece, but a beautiful gift for the couple after the party!

There are already a lot of really great answers here so I don't really have anything to add. I do think that pictures of them over the years would be great though and having all the guests write a fond memory would be wonderful.
Good Luck!!

I would decorated one side of wall with family tree begun with them. Use sun flowers, dried yellow corn, golden pumkins/squash
to decorated on table with Multie color Autumn leaves.
Use tortilla or flat brad to make wrap in corn shape with your choice of fillings and arrange them in circle with point to center on Golden tray with saucer in the middle. I would use either rad or dark brown as basic color so gold can stands out.
Good luck!

Collect all the pics you can from over the years. Scan them in and make a newsletter out of them, with a short story on it.
I still have my grandma and grandpa's 50'th newsletter, and I'll keep it forever.

Put a big bulletin board on an easel with years' and years' worth of family photos for them to look at.
