I get much of my protein from cheese, eggs, vegetarian "meat," and beans. You can also buy protein powder, but I believe it's better to get your protein from the food you eat.

dried beans - maybe $1.00 to 1.50 for a bag (I have noticed that Kroger's dried bean prices are a little higher than another local grocer in my area)

Kroger has a good selection of organic and soy (imatation meat products) in their speciality food section of my local Kroger. I do not know an average price of these items (I'm not a vegetartian).

If you eat eggs - which are a good source of protein - you can get a dozen for about a dollar.

Cheese, yogurt, nuts

canned beans - range anywhere from 59 cents to a $1.00
