For holidays and such, we (me, my hubby & 2 kids) have dinner with my in-laws. Time after time I am asked to bring one thing.....veggies & dip. They bust their behinds putting on a BIG dinner and when I ask "What can we bring?" It's always veggies & dip. I am sick of bringing veggies & dip. A moron can make veggies & dip.
Anytime that I have suggested to bring something else, it's "Oh Maria is bringing that" or "Angela has lots, so she'll bring those. Don't worry about it!"
Their table always looks like a Martha Stewart magazine.
We live in a small townhouse and just don't have room to serve dinner to 15-16 people. They all live in houses, so they take turns. Please note that I ALWAYS help with the clean up. That's a lot of dirty dishes. So let's use the china & crystal cause Katie will wash it!!
In case you're wondering why we don't have meals with my family: My mom passed away 12 yrs ago. My dad & sister aren't interested in family dinners. Brother spends with his own family.

Would like to email for recipe, but don't have an address.
I did bring a delightful dessert once called Sex on a Cloud. It was GREAT. They all liked it, they all ate it, some even had seconds, but never asked me to bring it again.

It's not that I think I'm a good cook, I AM a good cook. You should see my husband! He LOVES to sample my cooking/baking and he's not the only one.

This year dont ask what you can bring...tell them you are bringing dessert. If you email me I will send you a recipe for the BEST dessert. I'm Aussie and I can assure you they will never have tasted it before and its the best. At my nieces wedding reception I saw men with spoons scraping the bowl. Show em what you've got...its their way of excluding you so you might as well show them up.

The truth is, they probably dont like your cooking. My brother's wife thinks she is a goddess in the kitchen and many things I have tried made me want to wipe my toungue with my napkin afterward! You may or may not be a good cook, their opinion is based on one or two things they tried of yours and it just didnt suit their tastes. Or you could suck at it but just dont know, since no one ever says that to someone else! When I was married I made all the holiday meals for his big family. His mother was BAD in the kitchen. Doing things like buttering the raw turkey with butter in her hands, which I never SAW her wash in 12 years, then replaced the butter left in her hand to the container it came from!!!!!! I could have died! LITERALLY! I loved cooking for crowds, I didnt like people to bring anything. They usually insist. This year dont let it get to you, take an interesting beverage or some other appitizer, no one really wants raw vegi's at that meal anyway! Oh by the way your very sweet to clean up every year, I hope the other ladies (or men) were at least drying or putting away leftovers, but this yr. dont do the dishes! Pull the rug out from under their feet! Sit down and relax with your hubby! They will get the picture! Most of all HAVE FUN!

this year change things around, instead of veggies and dip make what you like to do a dish that will go with the dinner being served.
if you think that they have enough dishes for the meal, then get creative and make some magic:
choose what you want to do, and if they say anything about the veggie and dip, laugh it off, and say that you just learned this dish [one you chose] and thought everyone would like something new......

OK, so shake it up a bit! If they want a veggie tray (I agree...boring), put a twist on it! Like an antipasto platter with olives and marinated veggies. Or put the dip in a hollowed breadbowl and use different veggies than usual. Or for the dip, make a hummus topped with parsley oil and chips on the side. Or make bruschetta with an olive oil/balsamic dipper.

Rock their little world!

Some families are like that. My in laws are similar and after 10 yars with my wife, I understand that they are very very stuck in the holiday routines. When they come to my hose they chow down, but come holiday time, they do not want anything that I made.

In my opin it may not be about just the food, ask your husband to ask his mom way you are not asked to bring anything else. And tell her you are a big girl and can take it.

SURPRISE EM !!
MAKE A DESSERT !
JUST MAKE SOMETHING THAT'LL KNOCK THEIR SOCK'S OFF !!
DO SOMETHING DIFFERN'T THAN THE USUAL STUFF .
BY WHAT I CAN TELL IS YOUR BEING PUT ON THE MENU !
SO DON'T BE LED JUST CAUSE YOUR INVITED ,AND ASKED TO BRING SOMETHING .
DO YOUR OWN THING AND TAKE-EM THEIR STICK AND MUD -BUT ALSO TAKE A SURPRISE!!
AND NEXT YEAR ,THEY WILL ASK FOR THAT INSTEAD OF THE RABBIT FOOD __HAR-DE-HAR,HAR!!
