Yes. You should have a minimum of at least 20 minutes before the start of the meal for socializing and greeting your guest. Allow them to become comfortable in your home with the everyone that is to be at the table before actually sitting at the table. Have some easy light aperitifs and drinks, then move in to the meal.

I don't think so, especially if the guests were late; If not, then I'd just take it in stride; different cultures react differently around food...some like to start off slow with some tapas/appetizers, others, buffet style, sit down dinner...as long as there's eating, laughing and good memories, who cares! Enjoy!

On the contrary, it is typical to receive guests in Spain with a platter of serrano ham slices, cheese wedges, olives and fresh bread... And if there is a nice glass of wine to accompany it, even better...

Think of what they will be doing before they arrive, then ask yourself the question, Would you prefer to have the food waiting for you if the situation was in reverse? ?

If you are in California when the arrive in Spain, then yes it is rude.

I would think it would be rude in any country... makes it look as if your guests are late. Appetizers, ok, but not the whole meal!
