Hi there! I am an emergency room nurse, and I have a bit of a background in this kind of thing. Unfortunately, some people are predispositioned to having high blood pressure due to genetics, and nothing you do naturally can alter that. If you are a smoker, you have to quit. Smoking causes vasoconstriction wich elevates blood pressure. So does caffeine intake, of all kinds. Sad, but true. Daily excercise and diet can help, but as I stated before, this might not be a cure. The thing to consider is this. Yes, we all hate to be on medication, especially if we would like to find an alternative. However, allowing blood pressure to remain high and uncontrolled can be a silent killer. The reason I say that is because your body can be in the process of irreversible damage, and by the time you feel sick, it is too late. Have you ever noticed the number of dialysis centers that have seemed to spring up all over our cities? There is a reason for that. Uncontrolled blood pressure decreases the amount of blood flow to your extremites, therefore it is shunted or redistributed to the areas that your body believes that it is needed most. Heart, lungs, brain. Not the kidneys. They are one of the organs, for some reason, that are left out of the loop. Over a long period of time, without the proper blood flow, kidney damage occurs, and it cannot be reversed. By the time you realize that there are problems, you are usually on the edge of requiring dialysis, and that takes over your whole life. Many people die waiting for transplants, there just aren't enough organs to go around. And this is to stay nothing of the increased possibilty of heart damage, stroke, and many other complications with uncontrolled blood pressure. Many people can hit target blood pressure with one pill a day, and many pills are affordable if you talk to you doctor to find the right one for you. I pray the best of luck for you in finding some alternative method to controlling your bp. If, however, you are unable to do so on your own, please don't delay in seeking medical intervention. You very well could save your own life. Be blessed! That is my little soapbox for all those people that come to me with 300/200 BP readings! Why did you stop taking your meds! :)

Well any efforts to control hypertension can be given by a doctor which I recommend but some helpful tips would be to lower your daily sodium intake, regular exercise, and avoid fatty foods. Be sure to consult with a doctor before you begin any type of diets so that he will be able to discuss your needs and pinpoint the areas where you need a little help. Hope this helps and best wishes on a healthy heart!!!

Read Dr Atkins' Health Revolution which describes a healthy system for doing this in detail. Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (Murray & Pizzorno) is also useful here. If you have really serious blood pressure problems, try to find a holistic or naturopathic doctor to help you. Good luck!

You have been given good advice by one and all. But if you ask me-Oh, you have already asked-do not depend much on it because from my experience I tell you it is extremely difficult to keep balance on hat straight and narrow path. Moreove the t ablet a day will keep the doctor away. But never miss it a day because it is like the old time husbands. Very jealous. If you keep taking tabs you may feel an euphoria that you were OK and go off tbas but whenheart will click that tab you will remember hell and heaven. so don't be overenthusiastic.

Hi Neena
The best way is to change your Lifestyle... Incase you are overweight (Check your BMI) then first step would be to reduce your weight (a 15 Day three times fruit diet would ensure that). You gotto supplement the diet with Physical activity as well. To begin with 15 minute brisk walk everyday and gradually increasing it.
Try avoiding oily and fatty food during this period. Jus stick to your requisite calorie intake and dont exceed it. With fruits the advantage is they get digested easily.
Hope it helps...
Hari

I am sure you have been told this before - but try and cut down on salt. You can replace it with other herbs and spices and lemon limes and chile. It only takes a few weeks to get so used to no salt that you don't miss it at all.
Also do something relaxing like yoga - or gentle walking to help you relax.

High blood pressure can be controlled partially by observing the following conditions.
(1) Reduce sodium intake.
(2) Avoid tobacco smoking.
(3) Stop consuming alcohol.
(4) Reduce saturated fat in your diet.
(5) Reduce your overweight and obesity.(In obese subjects, losing a kilogram of mass generally reduces blood pressure by 2 mm Hg.)
(6) Control diabetes mellitus.
(7) Avoid stress and noise exposure.
Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet. This kind of diet includes cottage cheese, fat-free milk, fish (not canned in oil), vegetables, poultry, egg whites, and polyunsaturated oils and margarines (corn, safflower, canola, and soybean oils). Avoid foods with excess fat in them such as meat (especially liver and fatty meat), egg yolks, whole milk, cream, butter, shortening, lard, pastries, cakes, cookies, gravy, peanut butter, chocolate, olives, potato chips, coconut, cheese (other than cottage cheese), coconut oil, palm oil, and fried foods.
If blood pressure increases above normal level unknowingly, it may lead to heart attack, kidney failure or brain damage. Please note that the damage once caused to the heart, kidney or brain is irreversable.
Please see the webpages for more details on Hypertension.

You've already been given some excellent advice.
If you're unsure about medications speak with your doctor about trying to do it without drugs. If that fails speak with him about the various drugs and their possible side effects. Some of the older drugs are both very safe and extremely inexpensive.
