This is something that happens only once in a while, but usually when I lie down at night. I typically sleep on my left side. Sometimes, as soon as my head hits the pillow, I will have a sensation that feels like a huge artery or vein is pulsing on the left side of my head. It's a very strong racing pulsation, and can be scary. The location is a spot just above and slighty forward of my ear. Not sure if it's related, but I also occasionally have a slight feeling of numbness on the lower left side of my face, the area close to the corner of my mouth. It usually lasts just a few seconds, and may not happen again for days, weeks or months. Has anyone ever heard of or experienced these symptoms?

I just went to the Head and Neck Surgery Department at Kaiser for something different but I got a couple different handouts about head stuff.

Tinnitus is a noise in the ears such as ringing, buzzings, roaring, clicking, etc. It is common and more noticeable at bedtime. It results from the failure to supress the natural sounds occuring in the head.

I would suggest writing down the symptoms in a journal b/c if you decide to see a specialist, you can tell them exactly what has been going on.

Once thing I have learned is that anxiety about your health aggravates the little things. If you are a generally healthy person, I would keep track of this but not worry too much about it.

Throbbing Above Left Ear

Nerves. Or salt.

Either way, don't freak out...YET!
Try this. Take 10 deep, slow breaths through your mouth. Breathe in, slowly, then slowly breathe out. 10 times. That will lower your blood pressure and SHOULD eliminate the pulsing. Think a pleasant thought while you breathe in and out--blue sky, waves on the beach, the smell of leather....

If it continues to be a prob, go have your BP checked. Lay off the caffeine, salt, booze before bed.

That is your tempel. Its kinda like taking a pulse with your fingers. You put pressure on the arterie and you feel the pressure push against your finger. When to lye on your side your putting pressure on the arterie in your tempel. Since it is so close to your ear you can actually hear it. You can most likely feel it also. No worries. Its normal. Take Care

I get something very similar. My doctor suggested it is possibly an aggrivated tempural artery. You can actually feel it pulsing and see it. I am a recovering cocaine addict and that has worsened it. I have been prescribed TOPOMAX to relieve pain and let blood flow better and topomax also hinders cocaine cravings. Side effects are drowsiness and loss of appetite. But, I like it. Otherwise, you could eventually end up with brain anuerisms. Good Luck.

It could just be your sinus passages clearing themselves up, if you have a history of sinus congestion.

However, my knee jerk reaction is to tell you to have a doctor check it, just to err on the side of caution.
