First of all, your are probably a diabetic, at the very least a borderline diabetic. Normal blood sugar is about 70 to 110. Sorry your finding out this way, but a blood sugar of 250, is not a good sign. A strong symptom of diabetes, could be if you ate alot of sugar or concentrated carbohydrates and this 250 blood sugar was taken closer than two hours after you ate. Could be you can control it with diet. My Advice Make Appointment with your physician ASAP. For your catching it early! Thank you for the opportunity to answer your question.

If that reading is legit, you need to read these:

For type I and type II diabetics (and those who are overweight and could potentially become diabetic). Copy and bookmark the webpages I‘ve listed below… they are invaluable for those with diabetes and/or weight problems...

I've found a wonderful book that will help you control your diabetes and minimize or even eliminate the complications. Some folks who became diabetic due to poor diet and obesity are effectively cured by following the advice in this book. I'm a type II (inherited), but it helps all types, especially those who became diabetic due to poor eating habits. It's by an author who has really done his homework, Patrick Quillin, Phd. It's called, "The Diabetes Improvement Program". I have tried his suggestions and found them to be very helpful. I have no complications whatsoever and my blood sugar levels are quite stable. Yes, I still have to take Metformin (Glucophage) daily, but it's the minimum dosage (500mg) and I only have to take it twice a day. I have been off Metformin for as much as a week, but this was with vigorous exercise. Many, what I call, non-hereditary type IIs (those that don't have a close relative who had it) have gotten off medication completely, just with diet, exercise, and supplements. So, in some instances, it most certainly can be 'effectively' cured. Read more about it here:

The book explains what's going on in our system and what to do about it. It's really easy and inexpensive. It's basically diet, supplements, and exercise. For example, did you know that cinnamon helps blood sugar absorption? It also controls cholesterol and triglycerides. This is according to the USDA:

For men: Are you suffering from erectile dysfunction? I was. Yes, WAS. Now that everything's under control, I'm able to have nearly normal sex again. I've also put together a little webpage highlighting some of the things I've learned here:

I agree that 250 is most likely a diabetic result. I am a nurse, and a diabetic. You need to contact your doctor. I'm curious as to why you checked it in the first place? Were you trying out someone else's glucometer? Were you having symptoms, such as those listed above? Was this the result of a fasting blood sugar lab along with other labs?

Uhhhh, what makes you think that the person that has a BS reading of 250 is "non-diabetic"? I would say that they are most likely diabetic and that more importantly their diabetes is not at all being controlled. Uncontrolled diabetics is the reason for all those ugly complications of diabetes you've heard about...blindness, amputations, death. Get thee to an Endo quickly.

Please get to a Dr. and have a glucose tolerance test, to find out for sure if you are indeed diabetic, and if you are, get instructions on testing and meds if you need to be on meds. Your Dr. will know what to tell you to do.

You can live with diabetes AND get your sugar levels under control even if you have inherited diabetes (my Dad is also type 2 and so was his Dad.) Yes it involves losing weight if you need to- it's easier to keep your sugar under control if you are at an ideal weight for your height. It involves watching what you eat, when you eat and how much- and if you do this you will also lose weight if you need to. It involves testing as your Dr. recommends and taking meds if they are prescribed for you. But you CAN stay healthy with diabetes. The first step is to see your Dr.!!!!

Possibly. First of all, make sure the machine is accurate. And make sure you wash your hands before the blood test. Sugars, Dirt, Oils can throw your blood sugar way off. You might want to call your doctor.

Very bad. You need to see your primary care physician and have him give you a fasting blood glucose test. You could possibly be diabetic with a reading that high. That is a high reading even for a persone who IS diabetic. You could be in trouble. Please call your doctor soon.
