The best way, other than abstinence of course, IS condoms. It's not 100%, but if used correctly it is the closest thing to it.
If you do give a women oral sex who has genital herpes, it's possible for you to develop cold sores on your mouth or lips. So, unfortunately using those "hideous vagina plastic thingys" is the best way of preventing herpes being spread to your mouth.
Herpes simplex virus 1 is typically cold sores, while herpes simplex virus 2 is typically genital herpes. I say "typically" because BOTH can cause BOTH genital herpes and cold sores.
And remember, herpes can be spread to another person whether the person is having an outbreak or not. In fact, according to Valtrex, 70% of people with genital herpes got it from their partner when they were showing no signs or symptoms of the virus (that's how I got it!)

I got clinically diagnosed with genital herpes (type 2) about three years back, when I was still in college and had a mindless one-night stand. I understand lots of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a huge mistake that one time and all of a sudden it seemed like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date other men again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl that has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/zAW4I everything changed.
Not only was I able to eliminate all remnants of the herpes simplex virus from my system in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This program provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love again. Now I want to help others by sharing this story.

dude, your question answers the question. You are educated about herpes - condoms do not prevent it because it is skin to skin contact. You already know - know your partner. Random girls is like playing with a gun - 20% of adults have herpes.
That said, herpes is not really that big of deal for most, but hey, who want herpes.
