My current roommate who is not a vegetarian is moving out. In more than one aspect I am please about this.

One thing I absolutely could not stand was when he would cook prawns and the whole house would reek from top to bottom.

Also I believe most vegetarians have a more compassionate world view and would enjoy living with someone who shared such core values.

I am a vegetarian and I live with three other people, two of whom are vegetarians.

Living with other vegetarians is good, because they do have a similar worldview. However, this means that when I am at home my own worldview is not challenged when, and I don't have the opportunity to challenge the worldview of others.

I am a vegetarian due to food shortages in the third world rather than through a belief in animal rights, so my housemates cooking meat doesn't bother. When I meet people, I find that being a vegetarian is a good way of opening a discussion about issues of social justice.

I wouldn't be offended because I'm not offended by other people eating or cooking meat. If my roommate were to cook, I'd prefer to be able to sample some of it, but if not then oh well. If I were offended by the smell or in any other way, then yes, because that affects my enjoyment of the apartment.

As far as roommates go, my philosophy is a rommate is a roommate not a friend, and the ideal relationship is to be friendly but basically stay out of each other's hair. I value my own privacy and when I'm home I generally want to be alone. A clash in core values wouldn't really matter to me as long as it wasn't manifested in ways that bothered me.

Having said that, it's really not surprising that I opt to live alone, is it?

I am a vegetarian, but i would hate to have a vegetarian room mate. I think it depends on the person as to if they would like a vegetarian room mate. I don't think that all vegetarians have a more compassionate world view, i think that is just the stereotypical version that everyone thinks the vegetarian and vegan people of the world. Don't assume anything.

Whatever the requirments are, find a roomate that suits you- however picky your reasoning may sound, if you have to live with someone, you have a right to be picky!

I've lived with a couple fellow veggies, which was great because we could share recipies and food- although my meat eating flatmates were often more than happy to share veggie meals too, and they'd always tell me in advance if they were cooking raw meat so I could avoid the kitchen if I wanted to- something I never asked them to do, they were just being considerate. I guess it all depends on the person!

I wouldn't go out of my way to find a vegetarian roommate but that's just me. I'm vegetarian and my husband isn't. I refuse to cook meat but it doesn't bother me if he does. The only thing that kind skeeves me out is the raw chicken. But then I'm a bit of a germ phobe too.

If you greatly bothers you to smell or see people eating meat, then yea.. I'd prolly go out of my way to find a vegetarian.

It sounds like you already know the answer to your question. I think you have to ask yourself how much better your life would be with a vegetarian roommate. Then be willing to hold out for one, because it might take a bit longer.

Good luck. :)

I checked on craigslist and YES people are advertising for veg-roommates, so it is not impossible to find one for yourself. Good luck!

No. Why don't you eat meat (aka: food) so you get along with most people, rather than a few hippies.
