i agree with the first answer, diabetes for dummies is a good book. i like the dummies series of books and have a whole library of them.
possibly the diet that has worked the best for me is the American Heart Associations diet for people with cardiac problems. its a sensible diet---and helps you eat healthy and take the pounds off slowly.
now-here comes the hard part. actually two hard parts. your friend needs to cut out all unnecessary sugars. no more candy bars, no more shakes, no more little debbies. eat at breakfast, lunch and dinner and no other time.
is it hard? hell yes its hard. i went from a box of little debbies a day habit plus candy bars plus sodas to nothing. i thought i was gonna die! but after a while you get used to it. the other nite i bummed a fun size crackle bar from my wife---you know the little ones? it was so sweet i wondered---Gee, how did I ever eat TONS of this stuff?
and last, but not least---exercise. walk. walking is the easiest and cheapest method of cardiovascular exercise there is. 30 minutes a day--every other day. work up from there if you can.
its been two years since i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my life was turned on its head. i had to stop or unlearn eating habits i'd had for 48 years!
but it gets easier. now, like i said, candy bars are just too sweet for me. there are lots of diabetic cookbooks out there, google "diabetic cookbooks".
nows the time for your friend to get going---maybe head this off before she requires daily insulin injections--like i do. first thing i do every morning is stick my finger and check the blood sugar--every day. she wants to avoid that if possible.

Well it's funny that you asked this question today OF ALL DAYS TODAY HAHA. !! I just did a survey today on diabetes and there's a "TOLL FREE 800 NUMBER THAT SHE CAN CALL ALSO THERE'S ACCU CHEK ACTIVE NUMBER , that will ask information on your diabetic supplies of which i know she doesn't have that yet but if she can by pass all that somehow or way that might send her a book also the Library too. THERE'S reasearch being done for people as of today with diabetes and this one girl in Florida had some sort of surgery to help control her diabetes , cause she had a big problem i suppose with the way she talked on the t.v of her sugar levels being up and down. So maybe it'll will come your and my way SOMEDAY SOON, and DON'T KNOW THE COST THEY DIDN'T GO INTO THAT ON THE T.V. HOPE THIS MEANS SOMETHING FOR ALL US DIABETICS. !!! Some things to know about type 2 diabetes. The first is that, depending on how bad it is, it can be controlled by diet. If you catch it early, before developing major symptoms, prognosis for treatment is excellent.
However, successful treatment relies on a rather strict diet. Simply put, your body can no longer tolerate a poor diet, particularly refined food. Obesity is a major factor in this. No one knows why, but something about excess body fat interferes with the metabolic system. Your body stops reacting to insulin in a normal fashion AND CAN'T TOLERATE EXTREMES IN DIET. How bad is this? Well, it will kill you. No joke. Your time of getting away with bad diet is at an end. You either comply or die. Straight up.
So. What is the diet you need? It's not too complicated. The first is that you can no longer tolerate drinking anything but water. No caffeinated drinks, soda (sugared or diet), coffee, tea, juice or anything else. Water only. No ifs ands or buts. You could write a book on why this is so. What the various things other than water have in them that will, ummm, kill you. But, it all boils down to one fact. For the rest of your life, you are only allowed to drink water.
No processed foods. No longer allowed. Your body cannot handle these anymore. No vegetable oil. No sugar. No flour. No pasta. No white rice, bread or other processed grains. No fast food. No starch. If it comes in a bag, box or wrapper, it is verbotten.
No grains. This is controversial and against prevailing opinion. Prevailing opinion is wrong. Grains are used to fatten cattle. They do the same in humans. Remove them from your diet. No corn. No rice. No wheat or anything else.
Starchy vegetables. Depends on how bad your diabetes is. The less cooked the potatoes or whatever you are eating is, the better. Eat these in limited quantities. If you can't control your blood sugar, you can't have these.
Meat. No processed meat. Eat lots of meat, chicken and fish. Low fat cuts only. Top round steak is good. Ground 85% (93% ground sirloin is good) hamburger is not. Neither are chuck steaks. Turkey and chicken breast and most fish are good.
Vegetables. Eat as many and as much as you can. Raw is best.
Salt. No salt added to your diet.

She should follow her doctors guidelines because if she trys this on her own she can get into serious problems.
She will need to know (from her doctor)
1. how many calories she can have daily
2. What exercise and how many minutes per day of cardio.
3. When to check her blood sugar be it: before meals after meals or at bedtime or when exrciseing.it goes on and on and on and on................
4. The doctor will need to monitor her weekly for months to get the best BS readings.
So , you see why this is just some of the things your friend and her "team" will need to know.
Sounds like you will make an excellence team member though and maybe you can go to some of the the doctors appt with her to help out and to get a better understanding of whats needed from the team friends.
Her friends and family will be an important factor in all this it will make her or break her with the support she will need.

I'm a type 2. Once she is on meds it will be even harder to lose weight. Got to watch carbs, Got to stay away from junk food, limit pasta, white rice, white bread, sugar type foods like ice cream candy, etc. I lost a lot on Atkins but you need to be committed or else very low carb diets don't work. Only diet soft drinks and lots of water. You get the message. I found that exercise really, really helps get the glucose numbers in control. It can be done. I was on 100 units of insulin a day and now I'm down to no insulin and 2 pills (actos and glucophage). Good luck.
