I have been having really bad headaches... Tension in the cerebral area, sensitivity to light and sound. My doctor looked at my tonsils, and saw that they were very large, which is normal for me,... she assumed that my headaches could be caused from lack of oxygen to the brain when sleeping or sleep apnea caused from my large tonsils... Can teens get sleep apnea? And is it extremely harmful for a teen to get? I am only 17... thank you!

teens can have sleep apnea. Although its not any more harmful for a teen then an adult, sleep apnea can be very harmful to anyone. start looking for research on the subject and get involved with local studies to find treatments

Sleep Apnea can occur at any age.

It is a dangerous condition because the lack of oxygyn can lead to heart diesease.
You will likely need to have your tonsils out,
or possibly sleep with a CPAP,
which is a machine with a mask that pushes oxygyn into your throat as you sleep.

Don't worry too much though....With proper treatment the problems associated with sleep apnea can be avoided :-)

Obstructive sleep apnea is usually secondary either to an anatomic anomaly (enlarged tonsils in your case) or to obesity, usually with a neck circumference greater than 42 cm. The best treatment for enlarged tonsils is (you guessed it) tonsillectomy. The good thing about this is that it is easy to comprehend and accomplish and it works. OSA secondary to obesity is a much harder nut to crack.

Yes, teens can get sleep apnea. And since you are getting the headaches, I'm pretty sure it is starting to effect you.

Did your doctor make any suggestions?

Good luck!

yes teens can have sleep aphnia. and if the doctor says that the headaches are caused from lack of oxygen to the brain, that in itself is very dangerous. if you want to get a second opinion, and then do what ever is suggested to stop this problem hope it turns out o.k.
