My 5 year son has asthma, it's bad. Everytime he gets a cold the dr. puts him on a steroid to help boost his immune system! He proly gets the meds every other month! Is this harmful in the long run! I can't think of what it is called right now, I wanna say prednisolone (spelling) but not 100% on that!

Prednisone can be very bad for you if it is used for the wrong things, but asthma is not one of them. BUT, he shouldn't give it to him unless the asthma is active. There are steroid inhalers to prevent asthma attacks without having to use the liquid all the time, if he's old enough. My son had to have it all the time when he is younger. He's 19 now and his asthma rarely if ever bothers him. The colds could actually be allergy attacks of some sort, the symptoms can be pretty similar. One of the things you could do to try and prevent this is to figure out what is triggering these colds or allergy attacks. My husband smoked and we had a wood stove, when he started smoking outside and we quit using the stove, the symptoms stopped. Also, roaches in your house can actually cause asthma.

It isn't harmful unless he's on it for more than 10 days or so at a time and as long as you give him the meds as the doctor prescribes them. Non-anabolic steriods are a common and effective way of treating asthmatics, as they have been for years. If your child needs to breathe, then you should trust his doctor and ask he or she about the long term affects. Perhaps you should address the issue of 'maintaining' his asthma, instead of only dealing with it when it gets really bad.
Another suggestion is to discourage anyone who may smoke cigarettes, from doing so around your child. I am a smoker, but understand that the smoke really and truly affects the symptoms in an adverse way-- anyone who would argue with a mother or try to guilt them about not smoking around a sick child isn't really working with all oars in the water, you know? Bottom line on my point here is that controlling the environment in which your child spends the most time may help alleviate how often he needs to be on the steriods...

Prednisone? My son was on that. It helped his asthma but he put on weight - a lot of weight. It also made him irritable and hostile - it is a steroid after-all.

Ask the Doc if there is something else you can use, non-steroidal or something preventative - perhaps he has allergies, have him allergy tested.

Prednisone is only bad when they are on it for a long period of time. Yes it has adverse affects on the kidneys and heart in long term patients but right now it is helping your sons bronchi stay dialated so he doesn't close down and have an asthma attack.

I am also a asthma sufferer and they put me on it from time to time.

Steroids are not used to boost his immune system, it is used to reduce inflammation in his lungs. If your child's breathing is really compromised, don't hesitate to use steroids because they do work great. But, the do have side effects such as decreasing the immune system and can sometimes make your bones brittle. Of course depending on what steroid he is using.

I know exactly what it is (the med). They gave this to my mom went she went to the ER the other night for allergies but they only gave her one dose. Prolong use of any steroid is not good for anyone. See if your doctor can prescribe something other than a steroid, less harmful or alternative medicine. If not, try getting another opinion.

Predisone can have horrible side-effects, esp. if used long-term. He needs asthma meds every day to help him. Unfortunately, a lot of those meds have undesirable side-effects as well. But asthma is too serious to go untreated. The up side is, many children outgrow asthma.

Prednisone is indeed a steroid. Over time, one can develop obesity and diabetes from using steroids. There are natural remedies to cure asthma. I strongly recommend the natural health site below for you to research your options. It changed my life.

i have to agree with the first answer, those states have the best air for the respiratory challenged...
anyways... yes prednisone is fine, it is a normal regimin that docs put asthmatics on when they are having difficulties
However, if you are continually having all these problems, ask about xopenex instead of albuterol, it has been proven to work a lot better in children. also take your son to a child pulmonologist have him worked up, and let them line out his respiratory meds....
