It is raddish, we (Chinese), Japanese and Korean also make raddish pickles in different styles and tastes. Takuwang is Japanese daikon pickle.

We widely use diakon in many ways, braised in stews, stir-fried, salads, dim sum... etc. Before Chinese New Year, My dad would prepare raddish cake with grated the diakons and mix with rice flour, Chinese sausage, shitake mushrooms, dried shrimps...!

Japanese grate daikon and mix with the tempura sauce or add grated daikon in soy sauce as a dip for grilled fish.

Chinese radish or Diakon: A winter root vegetable with white skin, also named in Japanese – diakon. It is slightly peppery taste and crisp in texture. It can be used in braise or soups or pickled even julienne then serve as salad dishes. Daikon is a very versitile vegetable, in Japan it is used in all ways, stews, salads, pickles, braised dishes, sometimes in tempura.

It is also preseved like we would do pickles, but with hot peppers, bean paste, garlic, it is used as an appetizer, generally it is served at any time of day, morning, noon or night, it is also believed to prevent gas and aid in digestion

Daikon can also be made into a sweet pickle called takuan (sp?). It usually has yellow food coloring added for looks. My husband cannot stand the smell of it, but, my children love it!

Its a korean radish and you can peel it and grate or slice it for salads or stirfys. Its can also be pickled. Its very fresh and earthy tasting with a slightly spicy aftertaste! Its yum!
