Any surgery that enters the abdominal cavity is serious surgery. With a well trained surgeon, that risk is minimal. It also depends on the nature of the pancreatic problem. Pancreatic surgery involving cancer has a bad reputation because it is usually performed late in the progression of the cancer. If I were having considerable pain (before intolerable), I would consider the surgery if my health was otherwise good.

Complications immedeately after a Pancreas surgery include rejection, thrombosis, pancreatitis and infection but prognosis after pancreas surgery is very good. Over the recent years, long-term success has improved and risks have decreased. One year after surgery more than 95% of all patients are still alive and 80-85% of all pancreases are still functional. After surgery or transplantation patients need lifelong immuno suppression. Though immuno suppression increases the risk for a number of different kinds of infection.

Get a second opinion on any surgury unless it is life threatening like appendix.

Loss of pancreatic tissue after surgical removal increases the risks for the development of diabetes mellitus and mal-absorption of food.
Preservation of pancreatic tissue is an important goal during surgery for pancreatic and biliary diseases to reduce the risks of loss of pancreatic tissue.
