Are Austalians more accepting of this sort of treatment? Are Americans less likely to put up with this sort of thing from their governments?

It depends on the jurisdiction in the US and whether or not it is legal. We had red light cameras here, but now they are gone due to a legal ruling.

One cant really speed in Hawaii even if you tried in most places, other than in Aussie were you have thousands of miles of open space were in the past people used to speed like crazy.
In the Rsa we have the same, speed cameras everywhere, as the most of us are speed crazy.
The cheapest way out for us is to remove the number plates, the fine for that is far less then the surprise in the post hahaahah
This is not a practice that should be endorsed, but on a breakfast run on a Sunday morning, its sometimes nice to open up the throttle of my bike, and really push it to the limit!

Cameras are the source of revenue. Governments will do anything to get money from its subjects. Cameras have nothing to do with safety. Just watch the positioning of them. They are set in such a way that it is impossible not to break the speed limit.example at the bottom of the hill where in order to be within the limit you must use breaks, or on the top of overtaking lane where you need to go a bit faster to pass the huge trucks bellowing fumes into your face .These are only two examples but are majority of set ups.

It is a way for the police to make money out of motorists. Maybe in Hawaii they have enough money.
