hydrogen would be one of the best renewable resources. one because fuel cell technology is almost there. the delivery system is the main factor but the byproduct is water so very environmentally friendly. ethanol in short term thinking can use the infrastructure of gasoline so would be a short term solution. nuclear power plants would solve electricity needs and are for the most part safe. a combination of wind, solar, nuclear and hydrogen would have to be used to satisfy the need for electricity. we are a good twenty years away from changing transportation in this country and at least that in electricity generation. when you figure a car purchased today would last about 15 years in order to eliminate oil the vehicles have to be available now to totally change over in less time.

Replacing fossil fuels is a good thing. Not currently doable. The wind and the sun are unreliable sources of power. I believe they could be used in conjunction with other sources of energy. I think our best bet within current knowledge would be nuclear energy. It is safe and reliable. But we must develop better ways of storing the nuclear waste that would be created. This is the problem with most green energy sources. We either cannot trust them or we have the disposal problem. I am sure that with all the research going on that a way will be found soon to deal with these problems.

Wind is a good source and so is tidal water plus river-wheels. "Best" is something we will have to wait to understand the features of any of the above. What appears to be an excellent source can drift off into a detriment when applied to all conditions.
One thing we know and that is that fossil fuels is not a good answer to our problem. Yet, in spite of our awareness that fossil is a health, and maybe even a life-threatening, problem, we are unnecessarily slow in turning a corner away from the substance.
Anything in nature that is faithfully repetitive, can become our solution.

fossil fuels are resourceful but it could end up as many as 50 to 70 years , same time we do need fossil derived oil for many other purposes.
considering our future generation we shall keep up the fosil oil and start using other soureces of energy leaving this as a fundamental storage.
if you consider other renewable energy other than fossil fules are four apart from neuclear energy a major debated one.
1.wind energy derived from wind operated generators.
2. solar received form sun ray freely placed on specially designed solar panels.
3.tidal - wave ( water based)
4. hydal installing power genrators where tidal or hydro jets placed to operate generators.
the above four are expensive to install and produce but safe to use and our generations shall use fossil for many other purposes.
hydrogen also is under study will take years to develop and marketted.

No single best source. Climate issues dictate best economical source. However, no real reason to replace fossil fuels unnecessarily. Seek knowledge and understanding before partisanship creates confusion.
