these tips may help you. My mom used them on me when I was a child. My aunt also used them on her kids.
You take masking tape and put it above the spot you want to cut. then you just cut under the masking tape.....
bowl. you put a bowl on the head and you cut around the bowl.
base ball cap. you put on a baseball cap back wards and you cut around the cap.....
you may be asking did I have straight hair....... hell NO. the key is to get the masking tape on straight...
and also, the bowl cuts were never a style..... it was invented by my mother who had to much time on her hands, and did not want to take her kids to the beauty shop, even though money was not an issue......

If you are having a layered cut DO NOT try it at home. Spend a few bucks or get a friend to do it, because you cannot see what you are doing at the back. Even professional hairdressers do not cut their own hair.
However if you just want it straight ina bob there is a way. Comb your hair very perfectly, it should be clean and dry with no product. Put it into a ponytail at the nape of your neck - at or below the hairline. Then cut the end off it at the length you want. This will give you a straight blunt cut with the front slightly longer than the back. If you want the front shorter than the back use two ponytails one on each side. The further towards the front they are, the greater difference there will be in length between the front and the back. But you have to be extremely meticulous to get this right. Allow an hour to do it.
Good luck, I hope you don't ruin your hair.

hi, i am fully qualified and would not recomend you do it but if you ensist then it is quite easy, start at the crown(top of head) and section off your hair and take small sections.Cut your first section to the length you wont and then take another small section.keep it small as you can see the first cut then you just cut each section to the same length working to the front of your head.take the sections as you see old women with rollers in. then go back to the crown and bring in the sides.keeping your sections small and fingers at an angle when blending in the sides...if you wont layers put a tight pony tail on top of head an make sure its wet through and comb it so it stands on end and cut about half inch off.take bobble out and you will have layers..its very difficult to write how you cut hair....

Long hair or short hair?
If you have short hair, don't even try.
If you have long hair, do a little bit at a time, and only cut short pieces of, that way if you make a mess, there will be enough hair left for a hairstylist to fix it.

Basically, the idea is to cut it so is same length, or a smooth curve if you prefer. Personally, I find the easiest way is with clippers!
