Wow, there have been a few passions running on this one!
To the Irish... both sides did things they shouldn't .... the Brits sent soldiers over (and truth be known, if they hadn't it would have been all out civil war), and people silly enough to attack an armed soldier were hurt. But don't accuse our soldiers of killing babies... they didn't plant bombs in civilian shopping areas, they didn't carry out punishment executions, and they did not invade another country... Northern Ireland is still British (though personally I think it was wrong to retain it when independance was given to Eire) I appreciate that some of the Irish were effectively fighting for freedom.. which I believe is true (Ireland for the Irish), and those Irish who want to be British should come over here and be welcomed. How would we Brits feel if we had German soldiers on our streets? But lets not pretend that the Brits are anything like Nazis... Eire chose to side with Hitler in WW2 under the official pretence of neutrality, so in effect we fought for the freedom of a country hostile to us, because it would be naieve to think that if Hitler had successfully invaded the UK, Eire would have been allowed its freedom.
To the anti Brit American .... it is true you could nuke us, and any other country. So what? Where would be the victory? You forget that - and your sport indicates this - you can't just win, you have to gloat too, and if you nuked us, there'd be no-one to gloat to. Plus the fact you would have lost the only country that HONESTLY treats you as a friend... it's our advice (especially military) that has helped keep you great... your country has won several wars... but every time you don't have our support you have lost! (Except the war of independance of course ;D ) what makes Britain valuable to the USA isn't our troop or monetary strenght, but its that we will tell our cousins the truth, and not just what you want to hear... and friends like that are rare.
People of the world... please don't knock America for being "the police"... yes the UN was set up for that, but like the League of Nations before it, has farted around and let situations develop too far down the line before it has acted. It's the old story of commitee versus leadership... committees take forever, a leader can get things done without dithering. In this case, the UN is the committee and America is the Leader. And why was the UN based in America, as opposed to Russia, China, Africa? Because it's the least likely (with Britain) country to send the troops in the the UN HQ and put all the diplomats/leaders of its enemies in the bag!
Some Americans did fund the IRA, mainly those of Irish republican origin. And America did use "Ethnic cleansing" against the native indians, but they've taken a look at themselves and have now taken a different stance.
Lets not pretend that all the terrorist action against the Brits and Americans is because of Iraq or Afghanistan... 9/11 happened before any of those events.
America helped the Afghans in their fight against Russia, and were criticised for not finishing the job in the first gulf war... they played by the book and eject Saddam out of Kuwait. They could have taken him out then, but stuck to the rules, and had ten years of critiscism for it.
The UK set up Iraq after freeing it from Turkish occupation in WW1, and we are freeing it from oppression again today. Its not us killing Iraqis... its Iraqis killing other Iraqis (and us at the same time). Even today, Turkey occupies part of Cyprus (British Sovereignty) as revenge for our helping Iraq in WW1
The bottom line is there HAS to be a world police or the world will be even worse. The UN is ineffective in even stopping people from starving in Africa, never mind dealing with terrorisim. Some one HAS to do the job, and the US and UK are the best equipped, able, and ethically prepared to do the job and then go home, instead of conquering other countries.
The terrorists say we bomb them, kill their children. We actively try to avoid civilians. 9/11 and 7/7 was aimed ONLY at civilians. When we sadly kill their children its in a action of response to what they have done to us in the first place, not in the spirit of retaliation, but of preventing further attacks.
After Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Admiral leading the attack said "I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve". This is what Al Quaeda have done.
I would say to terrorists... stop what you are doing. Stop attacking us, and we wont attack back.
If anyone has got through this diatribe without giving up, well done. You are a true Brit/American/Irishman/member of responsible community, prepared to listen to what people have to say. Thank you.

Wow, thats harsh dude. I didn't know this until I returned to England and let me tell you I've had my eyes opened quite a bit on what has gone on before.
I had no idea that America backed, funded, agreed with the IRA or that the stance on Isreal was such a big deal. Now it is becoming clearer and clearer on the harm this has caused but to answer your question...
Everything? No. I don't think taking the cane and slipper out of the classroom was smart. I don't think taking parental rights away was smart. I don't think following in mandatory ID is smart. I don't think sleeping around is smart. I don't think allowing violent criminals to walk the streets is smart. I don't think not knowing where your kids are after 7pm is smart.
But terrorism? I do believe that each and every country that believes in freedom and wants to live in peace needs to hop on board and deal with this mess. But then I also believe it should be dealing with terrorists and not firghtening little children.

I agree that Irish Americans giving money to the IRA was bad - but the majority of us here in the USA have since the end of the War of 1812 supported the British. Should I bring up that the government in London interfered with America internal problems during our Civil War supporting the Confederate States of America and the cause of slavery? The Anglo-American alliance militarily has seen us both through two World Wars and much more. I would hope that the British would stick by us as we have stood by you. Our alliance is a special thing for most Americans with both people on the political left and right. Your hatred seems misplaced to me and actually saddens me.

Its not the case of Britain backing America in everything they do.
The reason we are in Iraq, Afghanistan, and hopefully Iran is that we share the same values, we THE ALLIES not just America and Britain, but every country who are there fighting this war, just want to live in peace and be free no matter what religion you are.
If a vote was put to Britain, i know for a fact that most of the people would vote to stay in these Terrorist havens and finish the job.
One things for sure, i would rather the world blow up tomorrow rather than let some freaks run my country, and ram their religious views down my neck.
And as for the scum on here that say the English are pigs, and that they don't need us.. I say more than anytime in history you need us the same as we need you, and that goes for every Allie who are by are sides.
I would like to say that everyone that i know in the UK, and i work as a Taxi driver so i meet a lot of people, they have a great respect for Americans, and most of them love the fact that our country are involved in this war.
Its only a small minority like you who post questions like this that makes them think differently.

Woah. Woah. Lot's of hating in here....
Being english and now living in the states, I get to see things on both sides. If you've never experienced this, then you'll have no idea what I'm on about...
But let's be honest here, people are people. We're all human, we all make mistakes. But after living over here, I've discovered how grateful Americans are for the backing and support Britian gives America.
Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion on how things should be done or what should be done...but seriously...we'd never survive without eachother....

I'm presuming that this is a question for people in the UK (remember the questions you post here get put on the american and australian sites as well).
My answer is no, we shouldn't back america in everything they do. Somethings yes, but we should be very careful about getting ourselves mixed up in extremist ideas....which I'm afraid it looks like we have done recently.
On the other hand I don't think we should sit on the fence either...but I just think that by blindly backing them with all of our power leaves us wide open for attack. Our country seems to be forced now to formulate an opinion in favour of the american government - yet the majority of UK citizens disagree with the whole situation. It makes no sense to me.

I think Bush is crazy and I don't think Britain should have played any part in his revenge attacks. He's just made things worse.
He was obviously angry over the terrorist attacks in America, so he decided to get revenge, without thinking about what he was doing, and he thought it would be more accepted by the public if Blair was on his side.

Why not. One of our politicians had dinner with Saddam Husein. Our top politicians have been having affairs with other leaders since Labour came into power, and when they split up, America says lets teach them a lesson. Bomb them.

you say "Americans stance" that implies that EVERY American is backing this war. you should have said BUSH ADMINISTRATION.
and ill have you know that a GOOD MANY Americans do not support this administration or their actions.
you have to understand that everything that happens w/ our government is not ALWAYS a "vote for" process. the only person in our country that can declare war is the president. so there you have it.
take your anger to HIS door step, many of us Americans already ARE, he's just not answering the d@mn door.

No. Too many Americans are too stupid to understand the world & how it works. It is unfortunate that most of them are in government or the US military. They will never defeat muslim terrorism as you can't kill an idea...there are still Nazis in Germany & Communists in Russia...get my point?
