Interesting scenario. I believe they would have an issue if it were a weapon. Difference here is that some countries are unstable and would like to develop these weapons to have a source of illegitimate power to threaten other nations with. Australia is quite stable and not in this category.

not really. it is a democratic society and they do not have any suicidal religious tendencies, nor a political desire to conquer the rest of the world. However they would be discouraged from doing so and offered full guarantees of "nuclear umbrella" in a case of third party attack.
Of course, after the vietnam and Carter experience, everyone knows that the US guarantees cannot be believed. So it would be definetly sensible for australia to develop their own nukes, and IMO it is absolutely vital for south korea, japan and taiwan (to name a few) to develop them.

Yes they would. The U.S. ain't as friendly as it seems, and realises that its future with australia will shortly be very edgy (though both politicians hide it very well). America is only interested in fuel. As Australia is abundant with Gas, America will want that cheaply. Similarly it has taken large portions of Antartica which belong to Australia (just said we don't recognise your claim, it's now ours) as antartica is rich with resources which it intends to mine. When things become edgy, because the americans want things cheaply, Australia will suddenly be considered a haven for terrorists and invaded, and they don't want any nuclear weapons to mess that plan up - ohh and as Australia has pissed of Britain with its republican view, the British will say "up yours" when it comes to help.
