When my cat play by herself, sometimes she makes a hissing noise at her toys. It's not a real hiss like you would think, more like a "sigh" through her nose. She does it other times too, when she's putzing around, and exploring. Is this normal? What does it mean?

Kitty is claiming it`s territory whilst playing with toys especially if the toys have cat nip on them , when running around and hissing it is contentment.

That kind of huffing through her nose is a sign of excitement, she is getting excited with her game. It is perfectly normal and harmless. It's nice your kitty is enjoying herself so much!

If she is prone to bite and scratch through getting overexcited in a game with you, that huff through the nose can often be your warning that it's about to happen.

Yes, she is pretending to protect herself and to kill her prey. It could also mean she is sneezing.
