First encourage them to cough. This may clear the obstruction. If it doesn't clear;

Call for help if no one with you. Lean the child over your knee or bend them forwards, so the head is lower than the chest. Give up to 5 firm blows between the shoulder blades with the palm of your hand. Check between blows and stop if you see the obstruction has gone.

If the obstruction does not clear;

Kneel or stand behind the child. Place both your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it just above the belly button (below the ribs) with your thumb inwards. Grasp this fist with your other hand.
Thrust sharply inwards and upwards. Try this 5 times. Check again between thrusts.

Keep repeating 1 and 2 until the obstruction is clear. If the child becomes unconscious, lay them on a flat surface, put something down for warmth if it is a cold surface and perform CPR.

I hope the child isn't needing this right now! I'm a qualified first aider by the way.

Start by bending the child over and giving good hard slaps on the back between teh shoulder blades, check in their mouth to see if you can actually grab the food that is choking them. If neither of these work then try the heimlich manouvere.

I have had only one of my children choke on a peice of food. Thankfully it wasnt that bad and I was able to remove it by hitting his back. But if I couldnt remove it then I would get help if the other methods didnt work.

Put them over your knee facing down with one leg lower than the other (the one nearest the childs head) and slap the back really hard !!! Don't worry about hurting the child !!! It takes a good wallop to dislodge anything !!

it depends on the age of the child-if a baby has something stuck then you place them on your knee-only do the heimlich menouver on a child who is over the age of 10 as you could seriously hurt them.
