I had a cracked molar, which was causing me load of pain. My lovely dentist performed root canal work on it about a month ago.
In the last week or so, the tooth has become sensitive to hot food or drink. Really sensitive. If hot food hits it, I'm in orbit.
I went to see him yesterday, and he says 'but I took the roots out! It's not possible' etc. I'm not imagining this pain, I can tell you.
Incidentally, at the same visit, he has persuaded me to get a mouth guard because I'm grinding my teeth. Not sure if this is related to my pain, but just so you know.
Any ideas as to why this tooth is hurting, if the nerve has been removed? Help! I'm sure the dentist is a good one; apparently he lectures at UCL.

Thanks for the good advice so far, folks. I think a second opinion might be a step in the right direction - but then, he WAS a second opinion. Sigh. Oh well, off for another look.
Oh, and that's not really my mouth(!) I plagiarised someone else's cakehole! LOL...

Those who cannot do correctly , teach !!! The nerve from the tooth next to you molar is probally exposed - get to a dentist and find out . It also could be a reaction to the filling material used causinf your gums to be sensitive. Either way , only way to know ids to get checked . Feel your gums around the tooth and check for pain, swelling etc..

I work in a dental office, and wanted to chime in...Most of the responses have provided good suggestions, though. Did you have a crown put on right after the root canal? If not, you should. You may be experiencing pain for these reasons:
-The 'bite' is 'high'.
-Pain is from another tooth next to the tooth that had a root canal.
-The tooth was, and still is, cracked. (I had this problem - it feels as if a pin is being stuck down through my entire tooth then ripped out. The pain only lasted for a few seconds when I bit down.) Yes, a mouth guard would help b/c you may be craking teeth if you are grinding them. However, it does not solve the problem - usually a crown is necessary.
-The root canal was over filled. The end of your root is called the apex, and if the filling material they used went out the end of the apex, you could be in pain.

If your molar was cracked down into the root, I propose that this is the root of your problem, pun intended. And, sadly, if that is the case, your tooth is already condemned. Search "cracked tooth syndrome" and you'll find tons of information.
If your tooth was comfortable for a while, even a few days, and then started to hurt as you describe, I really think the tooth is no longer treatable and you will end up getting the tooth removed - even if you put a crown on it this week. Pain on heat is a bad sign for any tooth, but especially one that has had a root canal treatment.
Sorry.

It is possible the filling is too high. It is possible you need a crown asap. It is possible a canal was missed. It is possible you have an infection. It is possible another tooth near by is the source of the pain. If a dentist teaches it does not mean they are better than ones that don't. We had a saying in dental school : Those that can't teach . I suggest you go to another dentist for a second opinion

Maybe you should get a second opinion. Arrange an appointment with another dentist at the same surgery. My mum had a root canal done a few years back, but the pain came back. She had switched dentists and her new dentist told her that her roots were still in there which was what was causing her the pain. Dentists are humans, even they make mistakes, even the ones who perform lectures at UCL.

Dentists dont know everything do they, but he might have a point with the grinding. When my lower wisdom teeth were taken out years ago i still get the occasional 'toothache' where they used to be, like a phantom tooth. A second opinion in your case is good advice, I'd go for that.

This site has become overrun with jerks giving stupid answers. Dentists use to answer questions but I think they have given up.. I am close to forgetting the site too. In the meanwhile I am sorry for your troubles. it sounds as if there is something wrong and the responsible dentist is giving you the run a round. go to another dentist, get it teated and find out what went wrong in the first place. My opinion about mouthguards: they are now saying they don't work. do your own research on the web about them. In the meantime get to another dentist.

NICE SMILE!
The sensitivity could be from the tooth next to the treated one, it's probably feeling sorry for it! Try using sensydine toothpaste, placing it where the tooth and gum meet and leaving it there overnight.
The mouth guard is good for those who grind teeth, however they can cause bad headaches if they are not correctly worn ~ IE worn for too long ~ be aware of this and revisit the dental surgeon of your problems persist :)

a)root canal treatment is not 100% successful so u could still get another infection.u would need some more anti-biotics to calm it down and then either have the treatment done again or have it out!
b)if the pain is due to u grinding your teeth then u would need a bite rasing appliance(bra)this is bassically a gum shield to wear whilst your asleep!! hope this is helpful x
