I seen on animal planet that a dog has over fifty different facial expressions. So yeah I think they communicate. Besides have you ever seen a service dog or a police dog at work??

Some people have given you some less than kind answers - I think that that is unfair,
If you want to know what your dog is sayingyou can buy a BowLingual for under £100. Wikipedia suggest that it translates barks from dozens of different pure and mixed breeds of dogs It is based on the animal emotion work of Dr. Matsumi Suzuki's Animal Emotion Analysis System and developed at the Japan Acoustic Laboratory. It translates 200 phrases (grouped into six different moods), reflecting the "meaning" of the dog's bark. The device was apparently successful enough in Japan to be brought to the American market. It was named one of 2002's best inventions by Time Magazine.
Unfortunately reports on BowLingual's accuracy are mixed.
In the meantime, if you can't afford one of these, just do what the rest of us do and concentrate on learning what your dog means.. My boy is nearly three years old and I am still struggling to understand some of his moods. Dogs are far more complicated than we give them credit for. As you say they sometimes seem to understand complicated sentences - I often look at Benji - his photo is on my 360 site - and wonder what he is thinking.

Of course they do! The more you talk to your dog the more it will communicate with you. My lil dog will sit there and he'll move his mouth as if he's trying to form words and if he's wanting something no matter what you give him or say to him he will keep trying to talk until I finally figure out what he wants. And he knows the difference in the clothes we wear. If we get dressed in work clothes he just sits there, but if I put on my boots and curl my hair he knows I'm going in the car, he goes and sits by the bath tub and whines, he knows if he's going to go he has to get a bath!

of course they communicate, but just cant use the same expressions as us, so use body language instead, I know when my dog is laughing, excited, unhappy, unwell, hungry, needing the loo, needing love etc. Also they understand and know your needs.

I think so as they can understand certain things that we say to them like:
walkies
biscuit
cat
etc
I think they can understand you and as the saying goes 'they are man's (and womans) best friend'!!!!
