My daughter had been complaining about difficulty reading books and it affected her qrtly exams. The Opthamologist examined and concluded that she has +5 (+0.5 cyl) in each eye. The prescription glasses are really thick reminds me of magnifying glasses (I think they are magnifying glasses). Her vision didn't improve much as she says it's still kind of blurry. Can someone suggest if this Doc is for real? If he is for real, what could be the reason for this acute problem? Will her vision improve over time or will she have to wear these glasses forever?

I will have to seek a second opinion on this as I am not conviced that her problem is addressed adequately.

Did the doctor do a dilatation of your daughter's eyes?Usually to get the actual degree of someone,we will have to instill eye drops to weaken the muscles in the eye to get an accurate reading.

Usually for such low astigmatism (0.5 cyl),there is not much need to wear glasses unless there are other pathalogy problem.Even if you do need to wear glasses,it should be a very thin and light pair and not thick as you mention.

You might like to get a second opinion and also a cycloplegic refraction done on your daughter by a certified eye doctor.

Yes, get the second opinion.
Two other thoughts: I got glasses when I was nine, I don't know the prescription but they were for distance and now I'm at -8 (ie blind as a bat), so they may well have been quite strong, but I remember not thinking things looked right for a while after getting them. I was probably just too used to seeing things blurry.
The other thing is, glasses don't have to be really thick, they can make strong ones very thin now. I assume that goes for reading as well as distance glasses. Mine are only about 3mm think in the middle and 8mm thick only at the edges. (About 1/8 inch and 1/3 inch)

When my daughter was starting school [kindergarten] they did a screening one eye was 20/800 legally blind. She had to wear a patch on her good eye and really thick glasses. I would get a second opinion. Her pediatrician had said her eyes were fine.
