There's no guide, I think possibly the best way to find a partner is meeting someone while you are doing something you enjoy so that you automatically have a common ground, such as bowling or going to the gym.

Be yourself. Don't try so hard. Volunteer your time. Join a club/organization. Its a good way to meet someone that has the same interests that you do.
