It depends on the species of bird. Some birds are sexually dimorphic, that is they are different in appearance. Many birds are not. Bird do not have external sex organs, so you can't tell by that. There are two ways to determine the sex of these birds, DNA testing and surgical sexing, which involves making a small incision and looking to see what they have going on inside.
Some birds will give you clues by their behavior. Male birds will sometimes try to feed their toys, or a mirror, as feeding the female is a courtship ritual. Females will crouch on the perch with their tails up, as if inviting a male to breed with her. A HUGE clue is if the bird lays an egg, which breeding age females will sometimes do, even without the presence of a male.

ok i do know a lot about birds because my mom used to breed them and she still has a lot more birds. the only way you can usually tell if you have a female is that the males are a lot more noisy and will call and sing to the female. females are a lot quieter. males are the ones that are always whistling and chirping. another way is you can put 2 birds in a cage with each other and see if the breed. if they dont then you have either 2 males or 2 females together. if you have any questions you can email me at sweetie143691@yahoo.com

It really depends on the species. Some you can tell apart by the plumage, some you can only tell apart by a dna test. If your bird did not come with a dna report then you probably have one that can be determined other ways. It would help more to tell us what type of bird you have.

Depends on your knowledge of anatomy and your knowledge of the creature you are observing. I can't tell from its anatomy whether a fish is male or female, but if I saw one depositing fish eggs, I'd guess it was the female.

One what?
If you are refering to birds, some breeds of birds have to be surgically sexed, such as the Quaker Parrot, others you can tell by the plumage and size. You can search the web for bird classifications that might assist you.
