Was wondering if you could offer me some advice.

I looking for any suggestions as to where would be a safe and nice place to take my 70 yr old father on vacation. I am a 35
yr old SWM from the USA. I was in Thailand (Pattaya) for the first time in March of 2005. It was the best vacation of my life. The
people were friendly and smiling. The food was excellent with a wide selection. Things were relatively cheap. The bars and stripclubs
were fun. Hotels weren't bad.

Here is the deal. Me and my 70 yr old father are overdue for a vacation. The
thing is I don't want my dad sitting in his hotel room at night while I go out and raise hell in Pattaya. My dad is not a drinker nor is he a horndog. I don't think he would be into the loud music, neon lights or wild women that Pattaya is famous for. I am seeking any suggestions for a more mellow, relaxing, safe, yet still has a variety of hotels, resturants and activities for both of us to do.

Thanks
D.

Thai Cooking in Chang Mai: In the morning we went to the market, then we went to a wonderful house in the countryside and cooked thai food.

We cooked a course and ate it. Cooked another and ate it etc.
Wonderful.

There is a night train from Bangkok to Chang Mai - get first class though (they serve a great Thai dinner on the train).

The new night zoo in Chang Mai (see the animals in the semi darl - when it is cooler)

Thai boxing at the army camp in Chang Mai

The temple on the hill in Chang Mai - but there are some steps (and there is a lift if he can't walk so well).

The Bed Restaurant in Bangkok. You eat on a bed - and its not sleezy - more like the command centre in star trek.

No Hands Restaurant - Bangkok the waitresses feed you with chopsticks - you pick your own feeders : great fun.

Grand Palace + Emerald Buddha in Bangkok

the Siam Show in Bangkok -spectacular - take a cab (as the walk from the train is too far). Go early and eat there too.

A boat trip to the snake farm + you'll see the kings barges

I will preface the suggestions based your needs and your father's needs and try to put them together. I have been to both Bangkok and Pattaya. Pattaya has it limitations but, you can go there for a short visit with him if he likes the ocean.

If your father is a golfer there are plenty of golf courses to putter around for like USD 30 per round including caddy or cart.

Depending on your length of stay from Thailand. There are a number of day tours around Bangkok to the palaces, forts, and temples, to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, to the bridge at the River Kwai, River tours to the Royal Barge museum. There is also the Bangkok Zoo and maybe take a walk in the many parks in Bangkok. There is shopping galore at the MBK or Mah Boon Khrom center, Siam centers, Central World Plaza, Emporium center.

Evenings are a challenge, though if your father likes, jazz, country or blues, there are many venues in hotels that play that kind of music. There are some shows that might be entertaining like cabaret shows. And you know he might like to spend a quiet evening watching TV in the room too. Many times, the hotel has a bar with a live band where you can sit and talk to the other guests.

And being that your father is 70 y.o. he might be a little shy about going for a massage. That is something you both could do. There are of course the sex massages along Ratchadapisek or you can find a "legitimate" massage place along Sukhumvit or in Pratunam that provides a more soothing experience. And many times there is a spa in your hotel depending on where you stay. It costs as much or more than the sex massages.

You did not ask about hotel rates and hotel reviews. I have found the best at www.asiarooms.com or you can check it through www.kayak.com

Enjoy

After reading your post I can recommend you only " Cha-Am Beach" and nowhere else. Cha-Am has very long streight beach nice (and cheap) hotels around. This place is good for "family type" people. Your father won't get bored there, as it is not noisy and busy compared to Pattaya, Phuket or Chiengmai. At the same time there also few bars and pubs available for your night outing activities. The local there are nice and friendly. Life in Cha-Am is not rush so both of you can meet in half way by choosing Cha-Am as your next holiday's destination.

Phuket, Pattaya and Bangkok are definitely for horndogs.

You did not say how active your Dad is.

If you think you can't resist the tempatations of Thailand then I suggest you go somewhere for a holiday.

It does sound that you want to go to Thailand as your first priority, whereas perhaps your Dad should be your first priority. Have you asked him what he would liek to do for a holiday? Fishing on the great Lakes might be more suitable for a person his age.

I think you should take him to somewhere else, anyway but not Pattaya, Pattaya is far too much even for Thai people, too much everything and it's not real Thailand, try Hua Hin, it's nice and you can still have fun time with bars and good restaurants and so your dad and relax on the beach and relax at your holidays home( if you rent one in Hua Hin).

you've had some exciting solutions....in my opinion, I have 4 canines and would attest to the actual undeniable reality that canines like beagles and labd shed lots even although they're short haired. Many short coated breeds shed more beneficial than lengthy coated ones. in view that we are speaking about a medium sized canines (as adversarial to a small one), my innovations woud be: (a million) favourite Schnauzer - smaller and lighter than a lab yet playful and lively - grooming is had to maintain the coat proper yet they quite do not shed (2) Wheaton Terrier - similar as above - they both may have lengthy coats yet are non-allergenic and non-laying off - also desires customary grooming (3) Vizsla - very short haired, doesn't shed too a lot - little grooming required (ears/nails) yet would nicely be TOO lively for Dad (4) Boxer - as above yet very good - desires good minded proprietor (5) My own well-liked (I have have 2 of them) are Border Collies - convinced, they have lon coats yet an established brushing retains them from laying off...similar with Australian Shepherds There you've 5...i ought to pass on yet my mind is in "slow action" - that's Christmas regardless of each and every thing...

I would reckon Phuket might suit both of you.
Or if you are not into beaches, the perhaps Chiang Mai.
Bangkok is too polluted.
I agree - Thailand is a fantastic place. I lived there for ten years, and my wife is Thai

Try Chaing Mai, inexpensive has alot to see and still has some nightlife if you desire. Lots of tours available and it is a peaceful city and lets you see the true Thailand.
