There is a lot more to consider than bag or bagless. Do you want good filtration? Do you have asthma issues?Portability? Type of surface your looking to clean?

Most vaccums with bags will put some form of dust and particles back into the air, therefore undoing what you have just done. And if its a bag that fills from the bottom it is a waste of money. Bags and belts are about the only parts to purchase after you buy it.

Bagless are better, but also more costly, in that they have a filter that can cost a lot and may become obsolete as newer models come available. They have better filtration capability than bagged cleaners have. Bags, filters and belts are about the only parts to purchase after you buy it.

Commercial vaccums are better at picking up stuff, not necessarily keeping it bagged up. Bags, filters and belts are about the only parts to purchase after you buy it.

Systems like Kirby and Orek are notorius for putting the particles back in the air and in my opinion only good for picking up the big stuff. You're spending a lot of money for unnecessary parts etc. I've never met a person yet that liked the orek after they got one.

Water systems like Rainbow are wonderful in every aspect except they hold the dirt in water and become a mold hazzard. And then you still have to empty that nasty water mess somewhere.

Built in systems are ok as long as you don't have a great distance to pull the debris, then you lose performance ability. Nice thing is the dirt is usually contained outside the interior of the home, so nothing goes immediately back into the air.

In my opinion: Bagless with a HEPA filtration system is best. However they do not come cheap. You're looking at spending $150 up to over $500 for a good quality system. Dyson is an excellent system but is still quite costly. Hoover and Eureka have good systems in the $200 plus range. Forget Dirt Devil and Bissell, they're selling the name only and not a quality product. Bags for DD and Bissell are hard to locate.

I love my Riccar (commercial version) vacuum cleaner. I bought it at least 7 or 8 years ago, and it still cleans wonderfully. I paid around $500 for it, but it has been worth every penny. Not only does it clean much better than cheap discount store brands, but it also hasn't had any mechanical problems like my cheap vacuums did. I had previously owned a Hoover vacuum and a Eureka vacuum, and both of them had continuous problems and would break down. I constantly had to have them repaired. They were mostly made of plastic and the motors were cheaply made. Yes, they were much cheaper in price, but they weren't near the quality of my current vacuum. Therefore, I would suggest that you really consider the best quality vacuum that you can afford... since in the long run, you may pay more for a cheaply made vacuum that is constantly breaking. (Also, my vacuum does have two filters, and I prefer a vacuum with one since filters help to trap pollen and dust as you clean.)
