He should be checked for asthma or something to do with his sinuses. My 4 year old daughter has asthma the only reason i found this out was trough coughing fits at night. she never had an attack where she couldnt breath. She also has allergies which made her cough even more. Now she uses a nebulizer before bed and takes singular for the allergies she hasnt had a night episode in a long time. so talk to your doctor about asthma and or aleergies. hope i helped

My daughter is also five and has the same problem. A humidifier helps out a bit and also propping of pillows behind her head. I have also recently tried out the following:
1 tblspoon vinegar
1 tblspoon cooking oil
1/2 teaspoon sugar (just to sweeten it a bit)
Mix it all together and give it to him. It seems to be working prettiy well for my daughter together with a bit of Vics on the chest and back.

My son has trouble with coughing at night also. His Dr. recommends Benedryl even though it's not for coughs it dries up post nasal drip that is likely the cause for some coughing.

the humidifier is a great idea. He also may be congested or has some sinus drainage that is causing that cough. ask him if his nose is stuffy. this can happen when he lays down. but this is why it is better during the day. give him some cough medicine.

It sounds like he might has sinus drainage at night, causing him to cough. Ask the doctor what medicine you can give him to clear up his sinuses.

Try to raise the head of the bed, this will allow graverty to help drain gunk from his thoat etc. A easy way is by putting blocks under the two feet at the head of the bed.
good luck

How long has this been going on? Has he been evaluated for asthma? If not I would ask that he be checked. Many asthmatics are worse at night.
