No Bar b que? If not then, if it's a good cut of meat, use heaviest skillet you have, cast iron is best.
Place on high heat with nothing in the skillet, after a few minutes (maybe 4-5) add about a teaspoon of salt, and spread the salt around the pan. Add the steak, continue at high heat to cook the steak, UNCOVERED. Rare is best, but medium if you must, if you cook well done it shouldn't be done this way. When steak is cooked, take out, turn off flame and add a cup or so of warm water. That will cook away quickly, remove the brown from the pan, and leave a nice sauce for the steak.

One interesting way to grill a steak is salt grilling on the stovetop.
You need very coarse salt, like "Kosher salt" and a heavy large frying pan. Cast iron is excellent for this. You also need a good exhaust vent because there may be some smoke. Put a layer of salt in the pan and heat on highest heat for a few minutes.
Season your steak, up to about an inch and a half thick, unless you like very rare, except for salt. It will pick up a little from the coarse grilling salt. When the salt is very hot (about 5 minutes on high) place the steak on top and grill your usual length on that side. When you turn it, brush off excess salt into the pan. Any excess salt is easily brushed off to serve.
The salt crystals act as a little "grill" and cook a steak very nicely. If you have used a marinade, be sure to dry the steak completely before placing in the pan. Always use tongs, not a fork, to turn.

Heat about a tablespoon of oil in a frying pan until it's really hot. Fry steak to your liking.
PS - the cooking time will be less than than what you are used to with the grill as you are in direct contact with the heat source (via the pan) compared with in a grill where the element heats the air around the steak and the grill plate.

Can always fry it in a hot pan. Better still f you have a griddle pan. You know, the ones that make the stripes.
Mushrooms and onions. Not the prettiest in the world but MMMMMmmmmm takes sooo good.
Pre-heat your chargrill pan over a medium high heat until it is smoking hot. Using a small pastry ring as a guide, cut out two thick circles from the steak. Wipe the meat with a little oil and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Toss tomato and onion slices in this mixture.
Place the meat on the hot chargrill and char on each side for 1-2 minutes. When nearly cooked drop in onions mushrooms and tomato.

i see that all the people giving answers are not regarding the size of the steak... if you had a sirloin steak and cooked it for 3 or 4 minutes on each side it would be very well done... here is the way i make my steak. buy a 3 or 4 inch thick new york steak. go home. preheat your oven on broil. then get CAST IRON skillet and heat it over HIGH HEAT with a splash of oil, i prefer to use olive oil but whatever you want to use is fine. while your pan is preheating massage a lot of salt and freshly ground pepper onto the steak and pat it into the steak, this will season the steak well. then when the pan is SMOKING. put the steak in. i don't care if you want to move the steak around but DO NOT TOUCH THE STEAK!!!! if you move the steak after it has just gone into the hot skillet, you will ruin the searing process! you want it to seal in those juices don't you? after about 2 minutes turn the steak over and repeat the process for 2 minutes on the other side. then after 2 minutes pop your skillet with the steak in it of course, into the oven and broil it for 5 minutes. this will make a very bloody steak... it will be pretty pink in the middle. but i like my steak medium-rare. if you like your steak cooked to medium then cook for another minute or two in the oven. if you like it well done, cook for another 3 or 4 minutes. but if you like it even rarer than medium-rare, cook in the oven for a MAXIUM of 3 minutes under the broiler. and remember this is for steak that is 3 or 4 inches thick. i hope this helps! also a GREAT topping for the steak is a gorgonzola-garlic spread... you take olive oil in a pan and get it semi hot on medium heat. put 5 or 6 garlic cloves into the oil with a could sprigs of rosemary and cook it in the oil for a few minutes until it turns brown... NOT BLACK! if you burn it, it will turn very bitter! then take it out of the oil with a slotted spoon. but it into a motar and pistol and mash it up really well. when it's mashed up well and cooled to room temp. take about 1/4 a cup of REAL BUTTER and stir it together until well combined. then take a mild gorgonzola cheese and crumble it into the mixture and stir gently, being careful not to break up the gorgonzola. then when the steak is done, spread it over the steak and eat it! it's great, i love it!

Shallow fry it.
Add a chunk of butter to the pan, some pepper and any other herbs and spices you might want. Worcester sauce also goes well. Don't worry about having too much butter, there's a reason for it.
Once the butter's melted and the herbs/spices/sauce are stirred in, add the steak and cook to your liking. Just before you finish cooking, add a couple tablespoons of yoghurt (doesn't taste as odd as it sounds!) and stir that in.
You have a nicely flavoured steak and instant sauce to go with it!

Broil it, season your steak very well and pop that baby in the broiler and it will be so delicious and juicy. Make sure you check it once or twice, so that you can turn it. Depending on the thickness of the Steak, and the doneness, this will determin how long you should leave it in the broiler. Enjoy and happy eating

Cast iron skittle on top of the stove is best. Get the skillet real hot and don't use oil, brown on one side 3-4 minutes and turn it over and brown the other side 2-3 minutes. Cook it longer if you want it medium well
