your question is a sensitive one.if ever muslims know my true identity after answering this,i may get killed.very well, everybody deserves an answer.Islam is the name of the religion,Muslims are the people who adhere to the Islamic teachings.Indeed,ISLAM is a religion of peace,i have numerous friends who belong to such faith and they are good people.they say that some of their brothers interpret the word "JIHAD" the wrong way,for them,JIHAD is a personal struggle to be a good muslim, not to kill, its like a war for the betterment of all people not to kill or to aggress,on the other hand, extremist muslims interpret "JIHAD" as an excuse to kill any i mean ANY non-believers(non-muslims).Salman Rushdie,a writter once say that the Al-Quran(KORAN) must be reviewed,he earned the wrath of the Ayatollah of IRAN,in which then the Ayatollah issued a FATWA,or edict to kill Rushdie.we don't have a control on those kind of people.let us just be broad minded that not every muslim is a Terrorist.they make the religion look bad upon the eyes of good pious muslims who just want to live peacefull lives.

If I remember correctly, Christianity is the religion of peace and patience, but do you remember the crusades, the inquisition, witch hunts.
Not that I think Muslims really mean it when they claim Islam is peaceful, Islam is tolerant to non Muslims only when they are subject to Muslim rules.

Muhammad life was in 2 parts. 1st part was in Mecca and the Koran was nice and peaceful, and 2 nd part is in Medina and the Koran was calling for Jihad. So Muslims are swinging gradually between these 2 parts of Koran.

U got the wrong message from the media man, just think where did u get this 'jihad' thing from, it it from a biased non-islamic source or a true islamic souce.
Our main Jihad is to fight or to suppress the feeling of lust, greed etc.
That is the main purpose of jihad.
As for jihad in a war, this is only applicable if a person is being attack or oppressed first. U cant initiate a war calling it a jihad.

In Islam, there is no compulsion in religion, in fact in most Muslims countries it is against the law to try and convert others to islam and to try to take the islamic faithful away from islam.

You're right... you don't get it.
Jihad is not simply declaring war. It is to protect the invaded land, as well as to protect your religion and family.
The action of several man cannot and should not be a label to the whole religion. There ARE extremist in every religion. Only Islam is the only religion blamed for the action of a few people.

Quran advocates fighting only for self defense. First verse in Quran that states fighting is
"2:190. And fight in the way of Allah with those who fight with you, and do not exceed the limits, surely Allah does not love those who exceed the limits. "
If you study the life of Prophet Mohammed, you can see, he was only preaching the revelation which he received and it was those who opposed to his message that turned violent towards him. So he first practiced maximum restraint when he and his followers were abused and attacked in Meccah. Then finally when the torture became unbearable they left their town and migrated towards medina. When the enemy in mecca followed the prophet in Medina with a large army, the first war in Islam known as Bedr took place.
if you search whole Quran you can find only fighting prescribed only for self defence. Some people quote verse from the middle to show that Quran prescribes killing all unbelivers. One most quoted verse is
" 9: 5. So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush,"
Without quoting the context and the verses below and above a neutral reader will judge Quran is commanding to kill all idolaters. But it's context is only regarding a particular group of idolaters who made an agreement with Muslims and later conspired against them breaking the treaty. This is clear from the preceeding verse
" 9: 4. Except those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement, then they have not failed you in anything and have not backed up any one against you, so fulfill their agreement to the end of their term; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty)."
Eventhough fighting is allowed for selfdefence, patience and peace is given importance
"And if you take your turn, then retaliate with the like of that with which you were afflicted; but if you are patient, it will certainly be best for those who are patient. " Quran 16:126.
"And not alike are the good and the evil. Repel (evil) with what is best, when lo! he between whom and you was enmity would be as if he were a warm friend.
And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,- none but persons of the greatest good fortune. Quran 41: 34-35.
See what Quran says how to deal with those who are not fighting with you
"60: 8. Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice."
See this verse, on how war is discouraged
"Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah doth extinguish it; but they (ever) strive to do mischief on earth. And Allah loveth not those who do mischief. " Quran 5: 64

The True Islamic Concept of Jihad - Written by Mirza Tahir Ahmad
JIHAD - THE HOLY WAR
A very important question which relates to the propagation of all divine messages. It relates to the instrument of propagation Adherents of almost all religions, as they move away in time from the source, are invariably known to have employed coercion either to keep people within the fold of their religion, or to convert others into their faith. But according to the Holy Quran, this in no way reflects upon their religion's attitude to coercion. No religion at its source has ever permitted the use of force in any form whatsoever. In fact all religions have been made targets of coercion, and no efforts were spared by their opponents to arrest the growth of religions at their source and to annihilate them completely. Every time a new prophet came, attempts were invariably made by the enemies to suppress his message through the use of force and merciless persecution. It is the most tragic irony therefore that of all the books, the Holy Quran is singled out today as proponent of the employment of coercion for the sake of the spread of its message. Even greater tragedy lies in the fact that it is the Muslim clergy itself which loudly propounds this view, blatantly attributing it to the Holy Quran.
The Holy Quran, it should be remembered, is the only Divine book which absolves all the prophets of the world, wherever and in whichever age they were born, of the crime of coercion in relation to the spread of their message. Hence it is inconceivable that the Quran should present its Holy Prophet (sa) as the harbinger of an era of bloodshed in the name of peace, and hatred in the name of love of God. This is no place to engage in intricate polemical discussions, so this brief introduction should suffice here. According to the Quran, the Holy War, called Jihad, is in reality a holy campaign which uses the help of the Quran to bring about a spiritual revolution in the world.
Fight against them by means Of it (the Quran) a great fight Surah Al-Furqan (Ch. 25, V,53)
These are the very words of the Quran which throw light on the nature of Jihad. It must be fought by means of the Quran and the Quranic message alone. Again, to tame one's rebellious nature into complete submission to God is another form of Jihad which is in fact the greater Jihad, according to the Holy Prophet of Islam. On returning from a battle, he is reported to have said:
We are returning from the lesser Jihad to the greater Jihad.4
Of course, defensive war is permitted only on the condition that the enemies initiate hostilities and raise sword against a weak, defenceless people for having committed the only crime of declaring that God is their Lord. All offensive wars according to Islam are unholy.
