If you put your foot in a rattler's nest and got bitten, I think you'd hesitate before you put your foot in a second time, right? So it goes with any position or situation that has been uncomfortable or dangerous for you. You wouldn't put yourself in that situation again any time soon. Or at least if you had any sense you wouldn't.

case in aspect... in case you've been in a courting and the girl cheated on you, you'd be two times as careful with her as you've been earlier. once you get damage, your a lot more beneficial carefull the fellow/those who gave thumbs down are so dumb that's unreal, it really is the right answer so do not pass through the thumbs down

If I get hurt a certain way I will be twice as careful to not get hurt that way again.

Make sense?

It means if you do something and it goes badly wrong that you would hesitate if you found yourself in that situation again. Hope that explains it clearly.

if you have been hurt by something/someone, you are "gun shy' about that person or event in the future, hesitant to trust..
