Don't run out to buy a FDD yet. Get a set of WIn XP OEM installation disks specifically for the laptop from HP - who now owns and supports Compaq.

HP Tech Support # 800-474-6831 Available 24 hrs.

Not all floppy drives are compatible. When you format a disk in one drive it doesn't necessarily work in other drives... not quite sure why, but I've had exactly the same problem happen with 2K boot disks and linux boot disks.
I think the situation with floppy drives has worsened since the 80's and 90's, when floppy drives were of higher quality. If your laptop is able to boot from CD you should try that. It's a lot quicker than using the floppies. You usually need to put the CD-drive first in the boot order (in your BIOS). Otherwise, you can try fomatting the disks using the laptop itself, or try from a different floppy drive.

Does your floppies have the dell logo on top? If it has, it means that they are meant for Dell computers only. Compaq laptops belong to HP so your floppies won't would work on it.

once you pick "commence homestead windows with cd-rom help", that could no longer setting up a sparkling win98. this function assumes that you've already got win98 on your computer, which will properly be corrupt and favor the files of the win98cd for restoration. on the right of the boot sequence for this function, if i'm no longer flawed, you get "a:/". the "a" rigidity for this function is your cd-rom, the b rigidity is your floppy, etc (truly no longer how that's in homestead windows, yet that's how this boot sequence a lot the disk rigidity letters). in case you want to do a sparkling installation of win98, i believe that's option a million. option 2 is to commence with cd-rom help, and three is as well w/o cd-rom help. so %. option a million and also you should actually be on your thanks to a sparkling setting up of homestead windows.

You only use installation floppies only when your CD firmware can not read your win xp cd.
