Some even persist after repeatedly having to wait behind cars turning right...

Is this just another strange and bizarre imponderable from the psychology of driving, or is there a good reason.

If you do this, (and some of you must!), why?

Oooh dear. I didn't indicate that I'm driving in Australia where traffic drives on the left hand side of the road normally! Sorry for the confusion for all of you people who drive on the right!! (That's most of the world except Aus, NZ, UK and a few others)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most answers missed your point...we are not talking about a freeway here, right? Just a two or three lane city road, with intersections and lights.

In this case, I drive in whichever lane I anticipate making a turn from...left or right. If I'm not sure what side a store is on, I stay in the central lane, if available.

I try not to go in the right lane at a traffic light, not for the reason you mentioned, but because people may want to turn right on red...I don't want to block them.

However, if I will be turning right within a block or two, then I stay in the right lane...that is safer than switching back and forth for the most part.

Not so strange, there are highways in this country that use the lane you are talking about for passing only. Highways usually. I used to do a lot of traveling throughout the Southwest and I ran into highways like that. Usually it is the man in the lane away from the curb that take a beating in an accident. Look at it this way. If you are in the inside lane and something happens, you have no place to go. If you are in the curb lane you have a better chance of avoiding a head on or other kind of emergency.

like many other posters said, the left lane is for passing and not for driving in (on the freeway that is). I personally will wait it out in the right lane if my own right hand turn is coming up, but if it is not and the traffic is exceedingly slow, I will go around.

Off topic: I tend to view the people who continuously change lanes back and forth to get there a tiny bit quicker as jerks...

Did you mix up your left and rights or are you serious ?

Because it is a rule of the road ! It is even a part of your exam to get your licence. It is also to ensure that traffic moves smoothly . . . that is if everyone were to obey the rules. This is one of my biggest pet peeves of the road when people do not respect this rule on the highway.

"Keep right
Keep to the right of the road or in the right-hand lane on multi-lane roads unless you want to turn left or pass another vehicle. This is especially important if you are driving more slowly than other vehicles."

Well knot head when you got your license from Wall-Mart did it ever occur to you that the right lane is the travel lane and the left lane is the passing lane. Man I think you would go further out of your mind if you ever traveled on a three or four lane highway.

Well I thought that the right lane is meant for making an exit and the left is the fast lane which is meant for passing or just when you aren't going to exit any time soon. The reason you see people driving in the right lane could be because they aren't sure exactly where their
exit will be and they don't want to miss it.

A lot of folks (especially older ones) are deathly afraid of changing lanes. They'd rather wait, miss a light, or drivew under the speed limit than change lanes.

It doesn't bother me: it's the people who "block" the left lane by driving beside someone that make me mad!

from what you wrote you maybe talking about side and city streets. one thing is you get used to staying out of the way like on the highways, slower cars to the right. ( the ones that obey the -----whats is it the ---law) left for passing . the thing you might know , is that the person in front of you before your turning down some street that person might have a turn coming up on that side after the light and doesnt want to cut someone off trying to get in there after the light , stop sign, ect. you'd probabl;y ask about that the next time, if they had to cut in front of you to get into a store or street right after a light or stop sign.

How did you get a license? Didn't you have to take a test? The law states that the left lane is for passing. There is nothing bizarre about it, they're just law abiding citizens.

it is the law of the road ,isint it on the test? never pass on the right ..the left lane is the fast lane its supposed to be for passing..so if youre gonna speed get back in the right lane when possible it makes it less obvious..lol
