You will probably be spending a long time at it as it is your first, as you get comfortable with the technique and the dfferent medium, so it should be something you won't get sick of looking at, and also something you can trust to stay looking the same, so not your cat because he will not sit still, and not a landscape unless it is in full daylight, otherwise it will change too much over an hour or so. If you have someone you like a lot that is very very patient and not at all busy, you could do their portrait. Otherwise, what about painting from a photo? This takes away the problems of movement etc.

I dont know if youve ever painted before but i would suggest a still life. Something you can look at and analyze. Maybe a landscape or some part of your house you love. Then later you can maybe paint a portrait or even make up something from your mind. Something you find beautiful or interesting. I really like oil paint because it doesnt dry for a long time so you can change whatever you want even a month later. Its alot easier to work with, atleast I think so. Well good luck and have fun. Just open your mind and enjoy it.

Whatever interests you. Self-portraits (favourites among many famous artists) are great because they're so personal & they change over time as you develop artistically. Plus, using yourself as a model is easier than getting someone else to sit still for you! Or maybe you prefer landscapes, still life or an abstract?

I would suggest painting from a favourite photograph rather than from real life because I find it's easier to work from two-dimensional than three dimensional objects. Plus, you already have the composition in front of you & just have to turn it into a painting.

Good luck & have fun!
