"Romans 2:1. Therefore you have no excuse, whoever you are, when you judge others; for in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things."

Have we become a nation of stone casters?

scifiguy, I'm talking about moral judgements here, about finger-pointing, about thinking you're right and everyone who disagrees with you is wrong, about thinking that those with different religious beliefs are less faithful than you, about many who show little tolerance for other points of view.

A society where everyone refuses to pass judgment on anyone else is a society where crime runs rampant.

What do you do when you witness a murder or rape? You say "Oh, I'm sure he had his reasons for it. Who am I to judge?" and then let him go free to do it again.

That is not the trait of a civilized society. Refusing to pass judgment on criminals only creates more victims that you bear partial responsibility for. How could you sleep at night knowing that you had the power to take a murder off the street but just didn't do it?

...

I know many people who use the quote you provided and the whole "judge not lest you be judged" idea as their excuse for ignoring crime and even covering up evidence of it. It is a despicable attitude, and more prevalent in our society than you seem to be aware.

Yes, I believe we have. I think we all need to work exceedingly toward eradicating judgment and condemnation from our hearts and minds. This country has suffered an almost total moral breakdown and it's starting to show....

almost. I would say a similar one that is more popular is, "do not judge least you be judged" where the rest of the passage is almost always feft out which includes verses2-6 of Mat 7:1-6.

You know, I don't consider myself Christian, and have little knowledge of the Bible, but it is an interesting passage. Sadly, many Christians, like Muslims or Jews, often fail to live like a true believer, and use their religion for stupid things. I respect those who are knowledgeable about their faith, and practise it with a heart. You may have a point.

Your only free will in life is to choose to resist or not resist your egocentric urges. Each time you resist reactivity in favour of behaving proactively, you have exercised free will.
