Usually cats can be spayed or neutered around the age of 5 or 6 months. If you have an outdoor cat, the earlier the better within that time frame. Make sure to keep him/her in or chaperone them outdoors so they don't go producing unwanted babies. The best place to do it if you don't have a vet is either the Humane Society in your area, or look online for local vets who often offer reduced rates for those who cannot afford the regular price. Please be a responsible pet owner. Hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs die every year because they are strays coming from unwanted pet pregnancies.

The optimum time for this is before a female comes into heat the first time and before a male cat begins spraying urine every where to mark his territory. A rule of thumb on age is just about 6 months of age.
Call your vet first, as some do it sooner, others later.

If it's a female, you should have her spayed before her first heat,at or around 5-6 months of age. For males,my vet advises waiting until they are around 9 months in order to let the urethral opening grow;this is to help prevent blockage of the bladder, caused by Feline Urinary Syndrome, which is very common in male cats, especially those fed a strictly dry diet,or a diet that is high in fish.

for females its before there first season around 6months is perfect. males can be done sround the same time. some vets wont do it any sooner than that due to the fact their insides are so tiny and makes the surgery difficult (females). if its females dont wait till she has had her first season as there is no reason to every time she has a season with or without falling pregnant you increase the chance of health probs later down the track. besides the fact that cats fall preg at the drop of a hat so you have to be on the ball to know when she is on heat.
at work we recently had an 10 month old kitten give birth to unwanted kittens, the owner wanted to euth them because she couldnt be bothered to spey her and didnt want kittens running around the house but i took them home and had raised them instead. please dont let the same thing happen to your cat if she is female. males are easy one snip done!!

For males, you need to observe their testicles. When they are "more" developed, it would be about time. The first time I had a male cat, I wasn't sure and when he started to "mature", he marked his territory around the house... even on my printer!! :( So, to prevent that, watch the balls... Usually 8-10 months.
For females, I heard that if you spay them before their first heat it's not so good (can't remember why), so if it's possible, let them have their 1st heat and get them fixed. When females are in heat they'd walk around meowing and meowing and roll all over the floor... loves to be touched... at least that's what happened to my cat. :) Again, about 8-10 months old.

My male cats were neutered at around 12 weeks of age. The earlier it's done the less likely they'll start to spray.
My female cats were spayed around 8 months.

If the cat is a male, when his testicles are visible, approx. 6-8 months. As for the females, I recommend 6 month, BEFORE the first heat cycle......

how old is your cat? you should get it fixed before 6 mnths of age(usually when females go into heat) some vets will do pediatric spay and neuters at younger ages. sooner is better!
