In Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting, one of JESUS' disciples is said to appear to be female. Traditionally, this disciple is thought to be St. John the Evangelist, who is brother of St. James & son of Zebedee. The reason it was thought that the apparently female in the painting was St. John, was that John, as the youngest (tradition thought, again), might not have had a beard. Many, especially those who see validity in "The da Vinci Code", believe that disciple really is Mary Magdalene, whom JESUS had earlier saved (traditionally thought she was saved from demonic possession or prostitution.) They also think Mary was JESUS' lover or wife. That is absolutely preposterous, according to traditional Bible scholars & Christians. In summary, some believe the female (apparently) disciple in "the Last Supper" was Mary Magdalene, while most still see St. John the Evangelist.

Ok....First, Dan Brown didn't notice anything.
Why? Because Da vinci code is a plagiarism of another book from Michael Baigent & Richard Leigh. Even the recent english court verdict says it is not, most of the ideas in the book has been taken from this novel.
Then, anyway, This contreversy is much older than we think. Since the period of Da vinci, a lots of people have questions about this piece of artwork.
We can like the book or not, think it is true or not. We can't pretend that we don't see anything. Same for the cups on the table, or the No cup on the table.

Dan Brown wasn't the first to notice this. It has been documented for ages that the person on Jesus's right could be a female as portrayed by the painter. It was a controversy for the Church, as many art historians point out. They emphatically state that the disciple Jesus loved was Mary. So she was included in the painting. It has been altered to look different buy subsiquent artiists. Rembrant even made a copy of it with many changes 180 years later. The original was 1495ish and in the 16th c the monks that cared for it did some repairs, then later in the 17th c they cut a doorway beneath it and repainted much of it due to it's detirioration. The problem was it's intonaco method. Painting on plaster with oil. Most rescently 1979 saw it 're-done' as it were.

Dan Brown in his novel, The Da Vinci Code voiced a theory with regard to the figure to the left of Christ in Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper being Mary Magdalene. The figure does in actual fact appear to look extremely feminine but art historians believe it to be a traditional rendering of Saint John the Evangelist.

what an open end this one is! john is actually pictured very effeminately because he was supposed to be pretty and loved by jesus very much. the church has a VERY gay past that most people that know about it want to hide. the renaissance artists (da vinci included) fully understood these concepts and were likely gay too. getting a practicing to christian to stomach any of this is like getting a muslim to eat a ham sandwich with bacon -- its just not going to happen. there are lots of examples in renaissance art of pretty boys that look like girls -- check out raphaels portrait of bindo altavi. in a really weird sideline michelangelo reversed this -- his woman all have rippling muscles suggesting he used men as models even for the women. check out the arms on the cummic sybil on the sistine ceiling -- she could be a pro wrestler. hope this helped! im sure i will get lots of hate mail now -- yay!
