You watch too many "Silence Of The Lambs" type movies. Your friend, depending on his current behavior status inside the prison, is either in a jail cell (disciplinary detention) or in a dormitory type enviroment (general population).

If he just got into the system, his first priority will be to crank out letters or make phone calls to those he can scam $$$$ from, for he won't make much a salary as he would in free society. And you'd be amazed how many clever ways inmates use to make this happen. Be aware of this at all times; NEVER let him con you or use you up.

The nature of his crime determines the years time he has locked up. And you can best bet he'll fast start cranking out the legal paperwork for appeals and sentence reduction requests--all pretty much futile, but "free" on taxpayer nickel.
