Okay, hook up all the gym's machines up to generators and they don't have to pay their own electric bills anymore...maybe next door's too. Store the remaining energy in a capacitor until ready for use to prevent electric outages in times of rest.

You may have a great idea. There is an awsome company called Davidson INC if you look them up on the web they may be able to help you move foward wit that idea. Also unlike other invention submission companies they dont cost anything upfront. Also you dont want to post that idea anyone could take it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. The power output of people's exercise doesn't even come close, even if you were to harness all of it. You could do this on a small scale, however. Your home exercise bike to be engineered to produce enough energy to charge a cell phone or iPod, or keep a small television set on.

Davidson will help you move forward with your idea but it will cost you $600 plus if they think it is marketable. They will send you the forms which will protect you and give them the right to "represent you". They will do a patent search to see if anything out there is similiar and talk to companies that may be interested in your idea.
Good Luck to you.

That'll be pretty funny when the entire block experiences a power failure because some jerk refused to take his 20-minute turn on the treadmill.
I must say, though, that it's a brilliant idea. =)
